Do you ever dream about your therapist? Do you ever discuss the dreams with them?
I've had 2 that I'm sure are symbolic. In the first I am standing in a house looking out at a pool, when all of a sudden my t appears holding what an unconscious 4yr old in her arms. I look closer and recognize that it's me. She starts screaming that I let the child drown. I ignored her and she drown.
In the second my t is holding a quilt I had when I was a child and pulling the stuffing out of it saying that its bad. I need to find new stuffing to put in the quilt.
I generally don't bring up dreams in therapy because I have too much other stuff to talk about. Just curious if anyone has ever delved into their dreams in therapy and resolved any issues this way.

happykat

Hi Happykat,
I've had a recurring dream for thirty years where I am trapped in a room and can't escape. Since I've been in therapy my T has appeared in the dream and helps me get out. Though she usually disappears once I am on the outside. Her take on it is that I am validating my need for her help, but still want to be independent, too.
I had the dream again this past week, though she wasn't in it. I got out of the room, but got caught and put back in. I wonder what she'll make of that? I'll let you know.

My therapist isn't even psychodynamic, but he perks up and wags his tail when I bring him a dream - especially one about him.
But then he makes me interpret it myself, which I can't always do.
I'd say yes, it's useful. Especially with recurring dreams. At the very least, they usually go away after I talk to him about them. At best, I become aware of something my subconscious is trying to tell me and acknowledge receipt of the message.

Not all therapists want to work with dreams, but these two seem pretty important. They both seem to indicate your fear that you are not helping your therapist help you and that if you don't, she will die (therapy will end?). Of course, our dreams can mean other stuff to us, so I might be way off base. I'm just so struck by the quilt dream, she has something important of yours and yet she has to change what is inside because it is "bad." Do you think your therapist thinks you are bad?
Anyway, I know you didn't ask what we thought they meant, I just couldn't resist. I like dream work. I'd bring it up at your next session.

Interesting topic -- I've only had one w/T. I woke up in her arms crying. I find it comforting when I think about it now. It happened 2 years ago.

Hi Poet,
Thats a really interesting dream. Did she try to make you interpret it before she gave you her take?
I'd love to hear what she says about your most recent dream.

Hi Scentedgarden,
>>SO YES I DREAM AND MY DREAMS ARE USUALLY WONDERFUL AND COMFORTING RE MY THERAPIS<<-That sounds really nice.
>>WE DONT DISCUSS MUCH IN SESSIONS AND LIKE DINAH, SHE WD ASK ME WHAT I THOT IT MENT, RHEN ID ASK HER WHAT SHE THOT IT MENT<<-It is hard to justify bringing dreams up when there is already so much to talk about.

Hi Daisy,
>>They both seem to indicate your fear that you are not helping your therapist help you and that if you don't, she will die (therapy will end?).<<
-That is very perceptive. That is exactly how I feel sometimes. Like I'm not really cooperating in therapy. I'm doing a poor job of helping her help me.
>>I'm just so struck by the quilt dream, she has something important of yours and yet she has to change what is inside because it is "bad." Do you think your therapist thinks you are bad?<<-Unfortunately most of the time I do. But I think that is strictly me projecting how I feel about myself onto her. I have a bad habit of jumping into other people's heads and judging myself. :(
Thanks for you input.

Hi Happykat,
T likes to have me give my take on my dreams first. I'll post what she thinks of the latest version of my recurring one after I see her on Friday.

I always have a dream that his office has moved and that I can't find it, or that I missed the appointment, or I also have one in which I really need to talk to him and can't find him or anyone to help. I think it stems from my fear of abandonment. I do talk about them with my therapist once in a while, he loves dreams. We don't talk much about them he just takes some notes and I explain how I intepretted it and then he comments on it. Actually, I think talking about it has really helped me.
