About six months ago I asked how to find a good therapist. I did what was said and saw three. All three just wanted to deal with the now and future. I am getting old yes 60 and feel no future. I wanted to go back to nursing but it not going to pan out. So I really need someone who who help me deal with the guilt my Mother put on me and then travel forward to first marriage , second, my kids, Sons loss of sight in Desert Storm to now. My kids don't understand nor do they want to anxiety and depression nor does my husband understand why I'm afraid to be alone. I don't understand that one either as I was so independant. So I need to find someone who will go over my past with me. It there a site? As telephone inquiries have gone nowhere. Or does anyone know one in Charlotte NC who takes medicaire or works on a cash basis even though I don't have it I need to do something now. Thanks Phillipa

I'm sorry it didnt work out yet phillipa. Over the past 8 years, Ginny is actually the 10th therapist I've seen - there was only one other who I really, really liked. Crazy huh? It's hard to find a good match sometimes.
I'm not sure about people in your area, but can you check sliding scale agencies? My T works at a United Way Agency, and I know United Way is a national organization, so maybe there is something similar near you. It's completley income based, down to $10 a session. Doesnt necessairly mean there would be someone there who was a good fit, but maybe it'd be worth a try.

I don't know - I think maybe therapists try to focus on the future (at least the ones I went to) and the present to get you strong and then go back and delve into the past. Why not try someone you are comfortable with and see where the relationship takes you?

Funny thought someone close to my age would make me comfortable. Well I had to go to the ER this year and they sent down a Social Worker to talk. She must have been about 20 but I clicked with her. Unfortunatately she only worked for the hospital and didn't know any therapists as she was new to the area too. It's so frustrating. The three I tried. They just said go out and do something. Didn't ask about feeling or things like that and saw them more than once at $60 cash out of pocket. So I will pay. Love and thanks Phillipa

Maybe you could get in touch with the Social Worker at the hospital. She's been in the area for a while, and may have met some people. Or she might know someone who could make a referral.
Many cities have family service agencies, I think. It could be that Charlotte has them; they usually have therapists who see people regularly. You could describe what you're looking for, and then they could make the best referral within their agency.
It does sometimes take a long time and a lot of putting yourself out there, which is hard. But if you keep going, I know you'll find someone.

Hi Phillipa,
I'm somewhat the opposite of you, I don't want to go over the past, I want to talk about the present and future, which right now are bleak. Come to think of it so was the past. Sorry, I'm right down in the hole with you.
My T is listed on Psychology Today's Find a Therapist webpage. I took a look at Charlotte and there are 34 listings. They have a brief profile and say what insurance they take or if they will work on a sliding scale.

Sorry you have to resume your T hunt again. I hope number four turns out to be a keeper.

Look for someone who says they do Psychodynamic therapy rather than Cognitive Behavioral therapy. They are harder to find (in (large?) part because they DO go into the past and tend to see patients for a longer period of time, and Managed Care doesn't like that), but they are out there. You could even call the three you saw and ask if they know anyone who does Psychodynamic therapy.
Good luck.
