Depersonalisation and Spirituality

Posted by Sigismund on May 23, 2007, at 1:42:52

Anyone have any ideas about how the experince of depersonalisation and unusual ego boundaries (forgive the jargon) can be eventually turned in a spiritual direction?

Interesting subject. You think?

I misspelt 'experience'.

Big mistake!

It is an interesting possibility. My episodes of depersonalization have been so unpleasant that the only thing I cared about was crawling back into my ego, however shattered it was.

I could see...

One of my episodes had some distinct psychotic features to it, so I'm personally not too eager to completely surrender to the unknown. The unknown universe out there (beyond my ego) has been a terrifying place for me. So terrifying that I'd do just about anything to escape it.

just my thoughts.

I went round to a friend's who had a book on depersonalisation, treatment of it, and stuff like that. I was interested to read that someone had tried methamphetamine and ECT together (1939), in the roundup of historical treatments. (No mention of narcotics.) The usual stuff.
But there was a section on people who had, perhaps after a lifetime of depersonalisation, seen it in a new light through some spiritual shift.

The depersonalisation I get is now something that I am used to. It is not *particularly* frightening.

OK

Here's the basic idea, FWIW

That depersonalisation can be an unwelcome and precipitate awareness of what the Buddhist concept of emptiness refers to.
