My therapist had surgery today (elective/minor) so I didn't get a chance to run this thought by her this morning ...
This evening is our elementary school Ice Cream Social Event. Having two children - spaced 5 years apart - I have been attending these ditties for 9 years. I do not like 90% of the parents at this school. It's painful to pretend to say "hi" and chit chat about meaningless stuff --- more so than with society at large.
Question: Is this progress or back-sliding? I decided I do not have to go anymore. I stayed at home (yea me!) and sent my husband to escourt our son.
I'm happy to be home but wondering the above question. I used to go but hated every minute of it. The moms are so catty, so mean, so tightly wound up. My husband gets it, and sees how they treat me, so he didn't mind.

Sounds like progress to me. You didn't allow societal expectations to rule you. And if your husband doesn't mind, then it's a clearly positive division of duties.
My husband has been the party mom all along. He never gets credit for cupcake contributions, etc. They always list my name. :) But he enjoys social stuff while I find it excruciating. So it's obvious to us what to do in this situation.

I agree -- progress.
Life is too short.

The reason I question my decision -
I do have social anxiety. So is avoiding the worse kinds of triggers progress when I used to be able to go and pretend to be civil?
BUT ... my babblers are right. Life is too short, I am much happier home with my daughter playing computer games, listening to her ipod music and chillin' --
Thanks.

Sounds like a great solution. Have the husband go for a change. Re. your social anxiety, you were going and hated it. If you are still going out and socializing at things you like, then I don't see the problem with giving the ice cream thing up for hubby to do. And hooray for him too.

Annierose,
It sounds like the right thing to do. Why put yourself unnecessarily through an unpleasant experience like that? Spend your time with those who appreciate your company and make you feel good. Who wants to spend an evening with a group of bitchy cliquey people!! Just hold on to the fact that it's not you, it's them.
Take care,
Witti
