My therapist and I were laughing about the fact that the stuff that gets reported in a baby book must have changed over the years. I put down my son's first word, and cute stories about his words for things, and his first step, and adorable habits he had. Certainly nothing of an intimate nature.
My mother wrote about how much I was a fussy crying baby, and about how my father was still out of a job, and the fights they had or my very very favorite... "(Dadddy) pretended to hit me (mother) and Dinah acted as if he had broken her heart - wouldn't have anything to do with him." To clarify on that last one... Daddy did not hit anyone at all, pretend or for real, in all the many years I knew him. The story does not seem likely, although amplified versions have me whacking him on the knees and telling him something like "no hit mommy. bad daddy."
The number of disturbing entries versus adorable ones seem high to my eyes.
Was it the custom to use baby books as a diary in the good old days? Were my mother's entries the norm?

Hmmm... As the date on that entry has me at the ripe old age of four months old, I have to believe that the story has more to do with the writer (my mother) than it has to do with either me or my father.
Four months old and already the center of a triangle. :)
On the other hand, at two my favorite words are "how come?" and "why", I played better alone, and I was wont to say "How about that!" whenever I thought I was being cute or clever. Some things don't change much. ;)

Be glad you even have baby books. mine did not think we were worth the time or effort I guess. There are no baby books of any of us.
I have them for my two though:)

I didn't have one.
I've always thought how it would be nice to read something that mom would take the time to write-- but.... as I've been told by older siblings-- she would tire from feeding me and just close the door and let me cry, so siblings had to step in-- don't think writing in a baby book was ever in the picture.flutterby- mandy

I don't have one.
but, one disturbing thing I've seen in our photo album are pictures of my sister crying because she thought she was lost
instead of comforting her my father was taking pictures of how "cute" it was to see her crying in front of a stranger

And again in this post. I was probably a bit rough on my poor mum. I was just surprised at the stuff that gets put in baby books. It was meant more as an eye rolling than a witchhunt. But I know that she did care enough to make one. Not caring is something no one could accuse her of.
Obsidian, it is absolutely remarkable what parents find amusing. I am currently looking over my cute stories about my son to make sure there is nothing unintentionally cruel in them.

What did you mean by witchhunt?

Oh no, I didn't mean anything about anyone else! My verbal abilities were definitely not up to par that day. I was trying to search for a way to say that I didn't want to make it sound like my mother was truly horrible or anything, that's all. But my mind was blank for words and that's the only phrase that came to mind.
I have word recall problems sometimes. And word substitution problems too. It's been happening a lot lately, and it's been worrying me a bit.
My therapist had said that it wasn't all that unusual to find things in a baby book that I would have thought was inappropriate, and I was trying to see if he was correct.

just feeling a bit triggery these days. The terms itself was a bit off putting not you, just the terms itself.
This is the end of the thread.
