it's just, I think, a bad habit. Riding my bike helps a ton... but anyone else have this problem?
It sort of started from dependence on all-nighters in college, and never quite died down... I like to think I'll do something I might finally focus well on that I've been putting off, but that's pretty much never.
At this point, it's just a hugely bad habit, akin to an addiction in that I know it's pointless, but I can't talk myself out of it and just join my cat to bed. On a good night, I'll go to sleep at 1:30. It's sort of rare, often it's 4.
any tricks? I know it's stupid, so what I'm asking involves brain hacking, pretty much... I'm sure I'll snap out of it if I return to habits I had long ago...
Of course, it was easier when I had a job that didn't start at noon...
=/

Actually, I don't see anything wrong with staying up at night if you like it, and you dont have to get up early to go to work. I love nighttime too, and once I dont have to go to work in the morning,I stay up.
Who said that you had to go to bed and get up at a certain hour anyway. If you had a night shift job, you would be up all night, so what's the difference?

i had this same, identical "problem" and wound up in a sleep lab. In my case I was diagnosed with two sleep disorders that were causing it. but that was me. it doesn't mean you have a sleep disorder.

I have the SAME PROBLEM!! I can lie down and at night and fall asleep whenever I want, it's just the actual getting to bed part that I have a problem with, which often leads to falling asleep on the couch until 3 or 4 in the morning, and then still having to get ready for bed. It's so strange to procrastinate when you actually WANT to do something, isn't it? Sorry, I haven't been able to find anything to combat this problem, but I just wanted to let you know you're not alone. :)

Me, too. Exactly the same and it's awful. I really did think I was a freak or there was no one else doing this. People don't get it's not really about insomnia, although I suffer from that, too, sometimes, BUT they are totally separate issues. My T. thought maybe I was literally afraid of bed, but we both know there's not trauma in my past or bad associations with bed at all, plus this is a recent thing over the last 1-2 years. My T. can't even suggest anything to try - at least nothing I'm willing or able to do regularly. It's like....i just CAN'T physically get into bed...or....or...the day will be over?? That's all I have and it's not all that helpful.
No clever suggestions here, just wanted to say I am another one.

For me I think it's a fear of nothing to do that I can do the next day? Phillipa

>> It's like....i just CAN'T physically get into bed...or....or...the day will be over??
soo true! I used to feel like that. I hated to lose the day... things changed though, now I can't wait for days to end ; )
Anyway Im the same. I work hard at going to bed. If I didn't have to be up in the morning... id stay up til 4am. Its literally making myself go to bed, and at first, when I needed to switch my routine I took sleep meds so that I could train myself to go to bed earlier. it helped.
And right now Im procrastinating on going to bed.
But there isn't really a problem in my opinion with you staying up if you have a later day, but I will say that when you turn your clock around and start experiencing "mornings", its great! I love that I get so much done before noon.
try sleep pills or try getting into bed early, just force yourself... its all about routine.
good luck

"Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome"
on Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_sleep_phase_syndrome
Utopizen, I also thought all-nighters were the cause. Mine started in high school.
You mention riding your bike. I have improvement from heavy physical activity & plenty of daylight. From a sleep study, I was Dx'd w/ DSPS, above & other.
Unscheduled, I'm inclined to get to bed @ 4am, sometimes later. But when try to sleep, neighbors make noise, phone rings, it's hot, guilt, so not much sleep. It interferes w/ social life & brain function.
Different job schedules are do-able, but I often end up w/ 3-4 hrs, as hard to get to sleep. My doctor recommended changing this thru light therapy in the morning (blue light - min. 10,000 Lumens) -And, through sleep hygiene, including getting ready for bed early (flossing, prep for work, etc). And meanwhile, the lights are dimmed & the computer monitor should be off early eve(I fail that one). Then can read & when sleepy, get in bed, but not before sleepy.
But, my worst insomnia has to do w/ med's, depression or other times, too much energy.
Hey, does your cat call you to bed?
Bedtime is better with cat company. Humans, yeah, but not the expert cuddlers & no purr.
This is the end of the thread.
