Online Therapy? (trigger)

Posted by toetapper on December 22, 2009, at 17:35:36

Has anyone ever tried online therapy?

I don't think I can do "real" therapy again, or an 800#, but I am so close to a crisis that I don't feel I can dump on a friend or family member this time of year...

If you are contemplatng suicide, please go to a hospital, and get in-person help asap. IMO, face-to-face help is the only way to go in that case

However, if you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, and/or generally nuts, crazed, etc. - how about starting here, and telling Babblers what's going on. There are some very good listeners and some lovely people here.

I will literally have to have a gun to my head or knife to my throat to ever call a 1 800 number again. I must have the luck of the Irish because I have gotten and had the worst experiences calling 1 800 numbers for "help". I mean absolutely the worst! I called 1 800 SUICIDE on my birthday one year when I had 1)moved to a new city, new no one 2)and hadn't gotten a card, gift or phone call from anyone on my special day. The person on the other end told me in a rather Dr Phil in your face way "you are feeing sorry for yourself". I am sorry, but what I was going through was not feeling sorry for myself. Who was to become my T later on confirmed that the telephone called was handled atrociously. As far as paying for therapy online I have often 'wished' I had lots of money so I could take advantatage of this service in between sessions. I think I am the kind of person that could use therapy just about every day of the week. It is one of the only times I feel connected to someone and not an iceberg floating in a huge ocean all alone.

I think I might like online therapy with someone who is really really good at it. In some ways it's much easier to be intimate and open in writing.

But so much of what my therapist does depends on his physical presence that I think I'd really be missing a lot.

Why do you say you can't do therapy again? Even if your experiences were bad (or too good to contemplate trying to replace) there are all sorts of therapists out there who can offer an experience that would be different from what you have had in the past.

I have never tried online therapy toetapper, but I have always wanted to. I know the feeling of not wanting to dump on a friend or family member this time of year...if there is no one else you feel you can talk to please don't hesitate to post here. I care about what you are going through...and offer my support and care in any way I know how. This can be a difficult time of year. You are not alone.
