hi all. im wondering something.
im seeing someone who is not a psychoanalyst. a regular psychotherapist.
he is telling me that its not necessary to be in analysis to heal from my past.im trying to figure out something that may not be figure-out-able.
if i get better without doing psychoanalysis, does that mean i lose out on something, does that mean i will not get completely better? does one path make one more better than another path?
im confident this guy can help me. but im scared that by stopping my search for an analyst in particular, I may wind up with some unhealed wounds even though i attain more happiness.

My sister did psychoanalysis four times a week (the whole bit -- lying on a couch etc) for I don't know how long and it didn't help her a bit. I did regular once a week sitting up and dialogue-ing psychotherapy and it helped me immeasurably and started helping within weeks.
I think there are lots a variables here. How badly do you want to change and grow? How good a "fit" is your therapist, analyst or whatever? Do you look forward to seeing him/her? Have conversations in your head in advance of therapy? How hard are you willing to work -- in the sense of being willing to face hard truths about yourself and admit to flaws and sources of unhappiness?
If you're willing to work hard, to change the self you brought in, feel you fit will with your therapist, then any sort of therapy will help. If you're not willing to work toward change and have misgivings about your therapist, no therapy will help.

I believe most studies on this question conclude the number one variable on successful client outcome is the relationship between the client and therapist - do you "click"? Do you feel warmly understood? Are you able to open up your heart to this person?
This is the end of the thread.
