Anyone with experience with a Psychiatric Advance

Posted by judy1 on August 28, 2000, at 12:54:22

Directive? I have downloaded a copy from the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, and am presently filling it out. Because I am pregnant, and have had numerous hospitalizations due to bipolar disorder, it is important to me that my wishes are met (certain hospitals, doctors, no ECT or teratogenic drugs). I live in California and was wondering if anyone has done anything like this, and if so were their wishes met? I hope no one thinks me paranoid, but I have many horror stories when it comes to involuntary commitment, and I am looking to protect my baby and myself. Thanks for any info- Judy

Judy1, I don't have any information or advice to offer - just some encouragement. Good luck to you with your pregnancy. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Thank you for the words of encouragement; since nobody seems to have any experience with it here, I've written to John who puts out a bipolar newsletter. He was kind enough to offer to see if any of his readers have had any experience with directives. Take care.

HI,

here's my recomendation. try to find a doc that you trust who will respect your wishes, and make arrangements in advance as to how the situation should be handled should you enter a crisis. that's what i did with my doc, and overall, I'm quite happy with the result.

I was getting really ill, and i wouldn't take neuroleptics, until he said that i was not coherent, and that he couldn't have a conversation with me. I got to chose the neuroleptic, and the dosage.

should you need to take a neuroleptic at any point, i strongly recommend risperdal.

all my love and support,

john

ps, let us know about your baby.
