It takes forever...

It takes forever for my computer to download all the stuff on this page. Isn't there some way to get rid of the earlier posts?

That's why Dr Bob archives them periodically. Other than that, there's not much to be done. One problem is that everything stops for the Java applet to run, but then it's just a function of your modem connections speed. Most of the time, your speed is limited by your modem, but if you have static on your telephone line, or the servers between yours and his are especially busy or the connection is rerouted through Timbuktu (you wouldn't know this as you're loading the page), the speed will slow down some.

This is, after all, Psycho-social-BABBLE, so I had to fill out the answer beyond "no, not really..."

(One possible answer would be for Dr Bob to switch the newest messages to the top of the board, so that they download FIRST, rather than last. That's up to him, though, and since he modified the script to run this way, my bet is he won't change it back without good reason.

I switched to a cable modem about 2 years ago and if I had to go back to a regular modem connection, I would go crazy...er. DSLs are a good option if you don't have a cable modem service (like ATT@home) in your area. My company is developing the next wave of Bluetooth wireless modems which are going to put everything else to shame. Ain't technology grand?

And I find "no, not really" to be a viable answer for many situations. "Sir, did you know you were going 30 miles over the speed limit?" No, not really....

I don't have internet access at home, on my computer with the 14 K modem, and although I have been thinking of resuming service, I think I would be really frustrated after getting used to the fast connections at work and at the library.

Dear Noa,

It's a matter of perspective and realistic expectations. My laptop is which is a major Lump accessory for me connects with telephone lines at 28000 (from the comfort of my couch and banky)and my PC in my office (upstairs) is cable. So, you're right, there's a world of difference.

But, if I keep that in mind when I'm using the laptop downstairs, and expect it to be much S L O W E R, it's not nearly so frustrating...

Probably caught it Em. ...happens to me all the time. Her giant brain hops around frog-like then zips around all over the place like the roadrunner leaving my leaving my poor little noggin in the dust.

However she may have just mistook you as the one having a fast, cable-based internet connection.
