There is a long history of depression in my family and I was wondering if it could be caused by a defective gene. Is it hereditary?

Often it can be hereditary. There are studies being done on family patterns for depression and bipolar disorder. I think Dr. Bob actually has a link on his "links" page, under the heading Studies ISO Participants.
