Depressed, think too much, why?

Posted by phil15 on February 5, 2001, at 11:41:51

From what i have gathered from many topics of discussion is that everyone tends to start pondering the infinite when they get into there depresses "modes". And yet it is cool to analyze and think, it really is not as fun as going with the flow of life. I am particularly switching from being "deep" minded and then becoming more involved with the social world and forgetting all those things. I kind of feel like its a up and down cycle for me. I go into social mode with average happyness. Then after being stressed out in social mode i retreat to thinking and depressed mode as if to recooperate. Then it starts all over again. I kinda wish i could just stay in one or another, like a drone, but it is impossible.

Anyone know why the depressed think so much, and question such oddities?

The only thing that i can think of is that we give ourselves the time...Or something like that...

Once again you are making broad generalizations, which may not be as true as you think they are... What you are describing sounds like a combination of introspection and obsessing, both of which you seem to be demonstrating by dwelling upon. There are higher degrees of introspective tendencies who become depressed perhaps because one has links to the other. And a tendency of depression is obsessive introspection ie. - rumination...

However folks you describe as drones sometimes become depressed as do extroverts who tend to be more outwardly than inwardly focused, when not depressed, generally. The picture is a bit more complex than you tend to paint it...however I shall not drone on or dwell on this, further...

You are certainly right dj, i should have phrased my initial question as "why do i tend to think so much, and some other people i know that are depressed?". Of course i for some reason, can never really say what i mean because i am so excited to get an idea out of my head, that it looks messed up to others. i.e. that theory on the energy world etc. Now that ive read over it, i think it sounds retarded and dillusional. Yet, i still think there are good points that can be taken from it even though i so terribly expressed it.

Also, I am quite obsessive with things like you say, but i tend to obsesse so much about something that i quickly loose interest in it.

Anyway now that dj has helped to make what i said clearer, does anyone know as to why "I think to much and others i know that are depressed?" and also why i cant just stay in one "mode" as expressed earlier.

Todd and dj, you both seem very good at figuring out people, like myself, and i'd really apreciate it if you could give me input once again.

-thanks

Phill5,

If you do some searching online perhaps through http://www.google.com for Myers-Briggs and introspection that may shed some light. You might also find some of the exceperts posted at http://www.undoingdepression.com may shed some light for you and/or generate more questions....

Noa's recommendation on reading about Flow is good too. If you do a search on-line under the author's name or Flownetwork (I think that's it) you can find lots of info. on-line about that too...

Good luck!

dj
