medical records/info anxiety

Posted by sgbt5 on March 5, 2001, at 10:46:06

Have 2 psych dx. Am going to three clinics because of
breathing problems. Records at this clinic include
a very pejorative misdiagnosis. Went to pulmonary clinic
and doc really got me to open up--got more medical info
than any other doc so far. Also got me to casually
agree I would correct any factual errors. After getting
info, became a marine drill seargent as far as exam,
testing, making decisions. I'm ashamed Ididn't have the
where withal to ask for breaks and say I dont' want to
decide that now.

Got the docs version of what I said with a bid bold
thing at the end saying I had "promised" to correct
errors: with no instructions on how I was to do so.
So I found a voice mail for the doc and corrected them
that way. Asked doc to call if got messages. Doc did
and was truly pissed off. "You can choose another doc or
you are welcome to work with me....yadayadayada."

Now I'm off to the allergy clinic, covering exactly the
the same history (and they share the same office).
Their format makes no sense to me and I got very
anxious trying to fill it out.

I have some vague hope these people can help me, but
In the meantime I've felt suicidal for the first time
in over 5 years. I hate that hospital because of the
misdiagnosis (which I pretty much instigated I specualte
by giving info I thought was right but wasn't).

I feel tremendous anger toward medical professionals
(bad things have happened with non-psych ones, too).
I feel really shitty.

What is your problem with not being able to give
factual information ? Maybe I do not understand your post, but you want help you have to be honest about what is happening to you.

I hope you receive the commensurate understanding that you deserve. This is not rational. It's like being
afraid of high places or small enclosures or crowds. I have been hurt
physically by medical professionals who did not understand me
because they expected one thing and could not hear
anothers. Also a lot of the formats of this informatiion,
especially the psych is anything but FACTUAL.
hOPE YOU had a nice day at my expense. You'd make a
fine medical professional.

Have you spoken to a psychologist to try and work things out? I have had some very negative experiences with psychiatrists and needed that objective advice to work things out. Sometimes the anger clouds issues for me too. I wish you well- judy

I noticed a book in the store a few weeks ago that was a guide to taking charge of your own health care, and managing the information, etc., and I wonder if it has ideas of how to handle this kind of thing. I just tried to find it online with no success. Next opportunity to see it at the bookstore, I will and will let you know if it is potentially helpful.

Thanks I appreciate that suggestion. I need to take conrol of the situation as much as possible. I think there may be some things on the net also. I went to a psychologist, gave him my history and had him give me a "diagnosis." Then I present that whenever the issue comes up. He even let me edit his notes: he had not heard things and/or I had not been clear in communication. I may consult him about this problem, too. I really liked him. However, I'm already paying over a $1000.00 for teeth gum and med expenses not covered by my insurance. So I'd want to be very focused beforeI spent any money on it. Ironic to me that when what I said was writtn down by a psychologist and signed it has more weight than my just saying it. He did add opinions somewhat diagnosis like. Oh well.
