Hello, my name is ____

Posted by RG on March 10, 2001, at 1:16:15

I'm just trying out this message board. I was looking up stuff on antidepressants online and this web site came up. It's fascinating, kinda. I've been in this depressed stand-still of my life for the past few months... I suspect it's seasonal. I'm in MN, so go figure. Anyway, I'm trying to get my bearings- I made an appointment to see a therapist this Monday. I'm apphrehensive; I feel like there's no major crises in my life right now to safely pinpoint my depression. Silly, but I qualify for a grant, so I'm not paying anything for this counseling. I feel like I should have something really _good_ to say to the therapist, so as not to waste her time. Sigh.

Anyway, just looking for a message board friend or two. It feels good to open up to whoever's curious enough to read this post. Heh...

Welcome RG,

Don't worry about having something good to say this week. Most doctors and therapists know that depression comes without a real reason most of the time. Some depressions can be linked back to a main source but often it is a state of mind that is very difficult to shake. We all have some type of unbalance in our brains that make things tough on us.

You may want to look up some stuff on the web about SAD ( seasonal Affective disorder) since you think that may be part of your problem. There are sights and therapies that strictly address this part of depression.

Are you under a doctor's care for depression? or is your therapist a doctor? You may want to discuss meds with someone who can prescribe them.

Depression comes in all shapes and sizes. The best that you can hope for is to identify your symptoms and look for a treatment that will address those particular symptoms. Everyone's depression is unique and our help comes from differtn places.

Pleas post after your appointment so we know how it went.

Chris

Welcome, RG!

As Chris said, you don't have to have a reason or some event to point to to have depression. It can just happen.

It's good that you're seeing a therapist. If he/she cannot prescribe meds, you might ask in your appointment about having someone else prescribed something. I think the most effective remedy is meds combined with talk.

Good luck and keep posting.

The main thing is to see if you "click" with this person, not if you sufficiently give them good material. If you feel comfortable with this person, then you will be able to open up in your own time in your own way. I have found therapy to be the best gift I ever gave myself, though it has also been the hardest thing I've ever done. Good luck.

Just wanted to check back in... Thanks for replying, ChrisK, willow, alisonm, tina, and JennyR!

The first session went really well. I was relieved to find my psychologist isn't intimidating at all, and very effusive and encouraging. She has referred me to the free clinic, so I will be able to be prescribed antidepressants even though I have no current insurance. Things are looking up.

And yeah, we got even MORE snow over the past couple days. Good thing I don't have back trouble, as I've been shoveling a lot.

I'm up in Northern Ontario and usually our snow is moderate, but this year it just keeps on coming!! The children are actually sledding down the snowbanks in our yard. Yesterday we got another five inches. It is pretty on the pine trees and helps to keep the children outside so I guess I shouldn't use it as foul language?

Keep in touch!
