Depression question

Posted by Gracie2 on March 19, 2001, at 7:33:41

I understand that waking up too early in the morning is a symptom of depression, but does anyone know why? What has one got to do with the other?

I think it might have to do with increased cortisol production?

I looked up cortisol on the internet and got so bored that I started reading about cocaine instead. Did you know that until the first World War, Coca-Cola really did have cocaine in it? (I thought that was a myth.) You could walk right into Harrod's and buy some; Freud loved the stuff. Coca leaves are still used to flavor Coca-Cola, but the leaves aren't imported until the drug has been removed from them.
Also, did you know that crack is just cocaine cooked with baking soda? The mixture makes a cracking sound when it heats up, hence the name.
I didn't know any of that.
I will probably make another attempt to look up cortisol today, if I don't get side-tracked again.

> I also think it is part of ADD, also, but why should I confuse you further? It depends on the person. I always was too tired, but going back to bed is a good reason to escape from life for me.. Get to a doctor or therapist to talk about it if you can. Peace, kathy U.

When I started seeing a pdoc last year, I remember she asked me if I had a problem with early waking, which I did...took meds for 6 months (seroquel, depakote, prozac) and slept like the dead. Now I am off meds and wake up every morning around 4:30, so by afternoon I'm beat. On weekends I go back to bed around 8:00 or 9:00am and sleep the day away, if I can. Like you said, it's a great way to escape life.
I haven't seen a psychiatrist or taken any meds for 3 months now and I'm sinking again. The waking up early is frustrating and irritating. I
wanted to be "cured", (i.e. drug/shrink-free)but I guess it's time to go back to the doctor 8-(

You did mention ADD, didn't you....;^ )

I had heard about it being legal way back when and about Freud, but didn't know about what crack is. Vely intelesting....

Hope your interest is just academic....perhaps good sublimation, as Freud would say?

The question about early morning waking is a really good one. I've never seen any attempt at an explanation, but it acts like a barometer in measuring the depths of my depression. It's impossible to feign as well, unless you are going to bed too early. That's often an accusation, but we know it's not true don't we? Otherwise why would we lie awake from 4:00 am till it's time to go to work and then suddenly become comatose?
