Hi, I'm new here, and looking for some information

Posted by juliedealer on October 7, 2001, at 10:41:49

Glad I found this board ! I've been reading alot, mostly about meds. for the past two years I never seem to crawl past the mark of thinking dead may be better than this kind of life. 2 weeks ago found a new pdoc and he started me on effexor combined with my old Welbutrin (even tho it is apparently not effective). My question may be dumb, please don't laugh, but it has been so long since I felt good, what kind of results should I expect once I get the right meds? Will I feel some drive for life again? Laugh spontaneously ?Look forward to something.. anything ! I've been living in this hole for so long I need something to look forward to.

thanks julie

Hi julie,

Welcome, you got me thinking, Maybe we all could contribute to a 'best of' collection. The collection could have sections like this one which is on the topic of how to tell when you are happy. This one was just on the last archived section and you might find it helpful. I did.

I keep a-wondering at how aptly this board is named...psycho babble and psycho social babble ...

Gentle Julie, whereas I would never challenge the sage input from my cohort Susan C., I can give you a quicker response...for now at least.

How do you know you are feeling better? This question, unfortunately, must be approached from the other angle. Do I feel "lees bad" today than I did yesterday? That is an easier bench mark than, "Do I feel good." After awhile, however, I feel you WILL be able to change the perspective, and it WILL become, "Yes, I do feel better today, and I feel better than the day before." It can be a slow and tiring process. Ask us for input, we can't help but jump in.

PAX

nice response, Pax, you're right, as usual. the question being, 'am i better than yesterday/last week,' rather than 'am i happy now?'

unfortunately, for us bipolar I people, the question is: i was ok last tuesday, so am i as ok as i was that day? i mean, it keeps going back and forth, never getting better on an even trajectory. two steps forward, one step back.

my P.S. to JulieDealer (are you really a dealer? is what some of us are wondering?) - if you want input or information or support about a specific drug or drugs, go to the "Other Half" of this board, specifically Psycho-Babble. you're on Psycho-Social Babble, which, as Dr. Bob says, is for 'just' being social. plain vanilla babble (for drug info) is at:

best of luck to you Julie, please stay in touch,

wendy

Julie,

When I wanted to see where I was in my depression I would take this little survey every week or two. It's just a simple group of questions that evaluates the symptoms of depression and gives you a numeric score of where you may stand in relation to the signs used in diagnosis. It's meant as a self evaluation tool so don't expect anything more than finding out how you feel about yourself.

When I first started taking it my score were always in the upper 30's to low 40's which indicated some pretty bad depression. Now I am down into the high teens and feel much better. If you track your scores over time you can also see where med changes may have affected your mood. I was able to see a big drop of when I added Mirapex to my cocktail.

Give it a look:
