Left Handed?

Posted by Ella on January 4, 2002, at 16:21:47

I read an article a while back that stated there is a higher percentage of lefties among people that are mentally ill.

What have you found?

Welcome Ella,
I too have read this, but I hope there is nothing to it. My son is left-handed, the only leftie we know of in a family of right-handers. I do know that there is also a larger proportion of presidents who are left handed than you would expect from the general population. I recently saw a book devoted entirely to the subject, but it seemed sort of negative so I didn't look too closely at it.
Are you a left-hander?

I am left handed

I've always heard that lefties are the only ones in their right minds :-) We are supposed to access the right side of our brains, but who knows....

I did a paper on cerebral organization and handedness, and one good point I found in the research was that handedness/dominance exists more on a continuum vs. being totally one or the other.

For example, especially among lefties, you can find people who write left handed, play sports right handed, and are left eye dominant. Or any other kind of mix among righties or lefties.

The mentally ill part was supported in the literature, however, research does not always distinguish between lefties who were born that way, who became that way due to trauma (head injury), etc.

There are more lefties in architecture, and other similar fields, plus artists, creative people in general.

One thing the research did talk about was that cerebral organization in lefties can differ. Usually, the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body. In lefties, a different setup can occur where the left side of the brain controls the left side of the body, etc. There was not much info on the impact of this, except that they seemed to think this could be related to instances of mental illness.

Basically, if you have a lefty, you are just as likely to end up with a Michaelangelo as you are to end up with someone in emotional distress.

I'm right handed but have depression problems. My two sons with depression are also right handed.

I've read that handedness is on a continuum too but I'm very strongly-right handed. When I had stitches on my right-hand from a dog-bite, I had so much trouble getting the food into my mouth just using my left hand. Couldn't even stir a mix in a circular pattern. I thumped the spoon back & forth. About all I can do with my left hand is scratch & type - it's pretty well useless for much else.

But I can write backwards very easily using my right hand like Michaelangelo did, almost as fast as I can write forward. I once thought everyone could.

Don't dispair .......;-)

You can learn/train the brain-right side brain for left hand ,left for right........ try writing first , like being a child again write using both hands together and mirror .....make sense?
Of course it aint perfect cause u slip into the habit of using dominant hand.

I should try more. When I tried to learn to play the piano as soon as I'd concentrate on trying to make my left hand do something, my right hand would freeze. It's like it took all my brain use to get my left hand to do anything that there wasn't anything left for my right hand. Strangely, I can pat my stomach & rub my head at the same time with both hands very easily.

I agree that if they didn't control for other factors, it muddies the research. For example, my mother is a lefty but was forced to write righty when she started school. I think this is probably rather common in people over a certain age. She has always been rather unconfident in her writing skills, despite a lot of education, etc. and excellent reading abilities, etc. I have always wondered what part being forced to write righty might have played.

I'm most definitely a righty--feel very uncoordinated with my left hand (and foot). However, my left finger tips are more tactilely (sp.?) sensitive, so I typically use them to discern subtle surfaces. And, I think most righties have left feet slightly bigger, while my right foot is half a size bigger than my left. And, I come from a family (on my mother's side) that has a lefty in every generation (my great grandmother, my grandmother, my mother, one first cousin, one nephew).

What about people who are righties and write righty but hold their hands and the paper and pen like many lefties do--kind of sideways, writing up the paper? I have a friend who does this.

Kiddo -
I can just see his ears swiveling at the mention of Mouse. I think that's probably covered in the new DSM. "Talks to mice." But only if it impairs daily activities or causes significant distress (it need not distress children or babblers). Feel better soon Kiddo. - Jane
