Jay, are you at all athletic? Every Hash Hound/Harriers (running groups) I've heard of has been a serious singles scene. What about social dance classes? In Boston, there are a lot of swing dance classes of various types, lots of young singles. I don't know if this is on in Canada as well.
Then there are feminism interest groups - show up at a feminist poetry reading, if you actually can get into the substance of the stuff, you'll attract plenty of interest.
Gardening is great, too - you might meet lots of old married biddies and geezers, but people know people ...
And there are emotional health hotlines that need staffers, and the staffers have supervisory group meetings, so if you want to develop listening skills AND meet someone sensitive to psych issues, this is another possibility. (The staffers, not the callers!)
Take care of yourself, and in that, don't condemn yourself for wanting a relationship. What Iso and Heather said about there not being so many people out there is really true - so keep your standards high, have your list of non-negotiables and don't waste your time and energy on women who absolutely don't fit. (But don't give first dates the I'm-ONLY-looking-for-relationship-material-NOT-new-friends talk, either - this comes across as pushy and uncouth and insensitive and all sorts of other very weird stuff.)

Hey, thanks...that was really sweet of you. (Damn..you aren't single..lol...but what would you want from a weakling-wimpy-touchy-feely-eternal-existentialist-fatalist? :-)I think I know what I gotta do...it's just putting it into action. Yes, I do keep my ideals high, but add a dash of practicality. I've got to shape up...as I am a bit overweight, and a gym might be a good start. I am a fairly tall and good sized guy, so it doesn't show a lot, but I know I will feel better slimming right down. I am not no 'GQ' guy, but yes I like nice clothes, and nice good cologne (as in not 'old spice'..lol)..and I carry myself well. I am French Canadian, and have a bit of hair on my chest, and some women hate that, but hey, can't please 'em all, eh?
I have broken out of my shell I have been living in for quite a few years...and damn I am amazed, now that I think about it. I know it's going to be quite a bit scarry getting back into dating, and maybe a relationship, but it's a price I am more than willing to pay. Besides...there are now more women in the world then men..hehe..just kidding.
Well, thanks for the tips..I will report back asap. And if nothing works, it's all your fault :P
..just kiddin'.Take care,
Jay

LOL! I'm sorry but I just had to laugh about that "not the callers!" comment... :-)

> (Damn..you aren't single..
heh, and if I were, this time around I'd be smart enough to stay that way. I'm just not meant to be partnered.
>.but what would you want from a weakling-wimpy-touchy-feely-eternal-existentialist-fatalist? :-)
>don't knock that, I'm married to one and it's pretty good. Neither of you are wimpy weaklings though, physically or otherwise. Some sorts of strength are undervalued in this world.
> I know I will feel betteryeah, try not to concentrate too much on the body shape aspect, that has its own complications, but you'll probably feel better overall if you work out some.
> some women hate that, but hey, can't please 'em all, eh?
>eh bien, si la femme de tes rêves te préfere sans poil, il y a toujours l'épilation à cire ...
> I have broken out of my shell I have been living in for quite a few years...
>Give yourself LOTS of credit for that. You've been through hell, sounds like, and although you can't put it on your resume or mention it within the first few dates, this is a lot to be proud of.
> And if nothing works, it's all your fault :Pmaybe it's my fault, or maybe the fault of the gym ... I earnestly recommend one with co-ed saunas.
