I suppose you've tried beer. (For the slugs, of course.) I know your a tender hearted soul, but at least the slugs die happy.
And while I'm terrified of amphibians (silly childhood story about cousins and a city slicker), my son and I really enjoyed looking at sirens the other day (through a glass cage of course). The poor little dears didn't seem too clever. There were little white wormy sluggy grubby things in the water for them to eat, and the sirens didn't see them unless they fell over them. Then munch munch. Bits of white worm sticking out of siren mouths until *suck* no more little worm. It was absolutely fascinating, even for my adult mind. My son plopped down to watch them until every last worm was gone.
