school inertia

Posted by m3 on October 2, 2002, at 17:30:03

I am sitting here again instead of doing my homework. I can't figure out if I really want to be taking classes toward going to grad school or not. I've already fallen behind on the work...they're pretty expensive...I'm worried about money but so far I can't make myself get a job, either part-time or full-time instead of classes.

I'm pretty sure I'm throwing obstacles in my own way because of some silly self-destructive streak. But I don't know if it's going to get any better, and if I don't get decent grades in these classes I'm better off not taking them.

And then sometimes they seem really interesting and I can read or work for hours at a time. It's confusing. I don't know what to do.

Okay, end whine. Just had to put it somewhere.

m3- Are you taking classes that are not interesting to you, or are these classes that normally interest you a great deal?

If they are classes you don't *want* to take, but that you *have* to take to fulfill requirements for grad school, keep your eyes on the prize for the motivation to do well. I know it can be difficult to stay motivated if you aren't feeling well. Are you feeling well??

Hope you pull it all together. Remember that if you apply yourself *now*, when these classes are finished you will have completed an essential step toward your goal.

Mal

grad school? i am just taking one semester at a time. i can't seem to do much more than that. are you a senior? i would think it would be easier if you were, maybe not though. just think, once you get in grad school you can be a know it all and feel so much more intelligent than the lowlife undergrads! my way of staying interested is just to take only the classes i am interested in. it worked this semester, although it may not next, b/c i have so many chem and bio classes to take. i totally agree w/ you, it can be mind numbing. i do a lot of research into areas i get interested in whether or not i am taking classes on them. my motto is what Mark Twain once said--never let your education interfere w/ your learning! i try really hard not to let depression suppress my desire to find out stuff, to be interested in SOMETHING. it takes determination. i wish you the best of luck.

Thanks Mal and madison. I've decided to drop one class, which hadn't really shaped up to be what I wanted, and try to focus on getting a job and catching up in the other (much harder but more interesting) class.

fyi, I have a BA, but the degree (German literature) isn't even close to what I want to do, and my GPA sucked. I'm taking upper-level undergrad classes now to boost my GPA and try to narrow down what I want to do in grad school.

Anyway, thanks again for support. I'm gonna try to take it one semester at a time.

Sounds like you don't have a problem with inertia with the course you're interested in. What do you feel passionately about? Oh, if I could go back and study something I felt passionately about I would consider it such a gift.

Once you sort it out, is it possible to get a job in an entry level in that field while you study? That would tie in your work and your school, so that you wouldn't feel like you were putting one aside. Not trying to work and go to school, but going to school and apprenticing. If that's possible. I don't know what field you're interested in.
