The Hours movie

Has anyone seen the movie "The Hours"? I liked it in spite of several things that annoyed me such as Nicole Kidman's awful prosthetic nose. Why was that necessary? Several of the photographs of Virginia Woolf were attractive certainly not grotesque as the Nicole Kidman impersonation.

I thought the movie showed depression very realistically and suicidal obsession in a quiet constant grim true to life way. And the impact on other lives of each decision.

I found a great site about V Woolfe's mental illness

I sat and read through most of it after I came home from the movie. It was fascinating. She was 59 when she killed herself so she lived with this for decades. Quite the role model I suppose-surviving that long I mean not finally going ahead with it. I guess that's what impressed me most about the movie-the way the idea of suicide was always there not just making a dramatic guest appearance in the end.

Read Mrs. Dalloway before you go see it if you can.

Been pondering whether to see the movie or read the book of "The Hours".. think I'm gonna buy the book.. and I know its on 3 for price of 2, as is "Mrs Dalloway", in my local book shop!!

Then if I really enjoy it, I'll see the movie when it comes out on DVD!!

Yup, we saw it a few weeks ago. I really liked it. I'm glad i read the book first though. The weird thing is that so many of the actors they chose were exactly how i pictured them when I read it. Especially Meryl Streep and Ed Harris.
Ah, the nose had you in a twist, huh? I figure they did it only because Nicole Kidman's face is so well-known...maybe they wanted to ensure that the audience didn't associate her with anything else. I really did forget who she was! Although i imagine that she could've done it without it because her acting made you forget who she was too. Julianne Moore was the one that really got me. The way she was with her little boy...I thought she really captured that "I have to pretend to be here and be happy" look. I know it well! And the look on her face when she holding back the tears...I was touched by the performances on so many levels. But one that upset me the most was the way the impact on loved one's lives (as you mentioned)was portrayed, esp. with Julianne Moore's relationship with the child. These are some of the things I worry about when I think of having kids, you know?

Do you know if Michael Cunningham has a history of depression? It would almost seem as if he had to with some of those insights.
Thanks for the website too!
