old man

Posted by Bobby on April 15, 2003, at 19:27:49

I was travelling down the road one day,as the sky began to rain
when I saw this gray haired man who was walking with a cane
well I could not leave him out there, and still feel good inside
so I pulled off of the highway, and I offered him a ride
He said, "thank you very much, my home is just a little ways"
and as I drove he told this story of his life in younger days
"When I was about your age, My best friend fell in love
and he valued it so greatly, he placed nothing else above
for his lady was so beautiful, she set any man on fire
just to look into her eyes would fill the strongest with desire
many months they were together, and he loved her more each day
until business out of town, called for him to go away
he told me to take care of her, he'd be back in a week or two
I said sure I owuld be glad to, it's the least that I can do
now it was only five nights later, since my friend had left us there
till he came back, because five nights was all that he could bear
He knew exactly where the key was, and he opened up her door
he did'nt think she'd mind, he'd done it many times before
He just could'nt wait to ask her, no this question would not keep
he thought he would surprize her as she awakened from her sleep
so into the bedroom, he was hoping to see her face again
but when he switched on the light, he found his lady, in the arms of his best friend
I've never lived it down son, and the old man looked at me
for all these years, I've bore this burden, that will not set me free
the question that he would have asked, was for her to be his wife
but instead that night in Colorado, my best friend took his life
well by then I'd reached his home, it was a broken down old shack
he thanked me once again and said that I was welcomed back
I did not reach my destination, I had changed my plans around
you see I was going to see my best friend's girl, while he was out of town
A few days later, I went back, to talk with him some more
but I could see there was nothing inside, through a window by the door
I had come there only to be surprized, and then I broke down in tears
No one lived there, and I realized, that no one had for years........Bobby

That was freaking AWEsome man. Did you write that? Is it a true story at all? Amazing.
i didn't quite understand the end though-- from this line forward (to the end):
"well by then I'd reached his home, it was a broken down old shack"
That got me confused. But anyway it was great.
