(Hi Lou, I couldn't resist stealing your subject line. Welcome back.)
I finally went to a new church I've been wanting to try. The aim is to explore my spirituality and make new social connections. I let myself down a bit. After the service they said there were refreshments off to one side, but most of the crowd just filed straight out to the parking lot... and I followed. I didn't actually talk to anyone except for the little part where they told you to greet your neighbors. I wish I'd pushed myself to talk to SOMEONE just so it would feel less strange being new. There were several other women there alone, it would have been fine to talk to them I'm sure.
The message was nice. Nothing that made me roll my eyes and bolt from the room. But the speaker used quite a bit of bawdy humor. I've never ever heard bawdy humor from a pulpit. It put me off a bit.
Maybe I'll try some other churches or groups.

It does feel odd at first, or at least it did for me. Most people know each other and you don't. It's probably worth trying a few more times. Or maybe you could call the church office and find out if there are certain times when there are receptions or something for potential members. Fortunately, when I was scoping out my present church, I ran into my real estate agent who introduced me to the pastor who made a call on me etc. I don't know though. This church has been struggling for all the years I've been there, and although it tries, it doesn't have anywhere near the youth or young adult program it needs. Sigh. I like the people, but they're mostly older and unless things change, this church won't be able to provide the supportive environment I'd like for my son as he grows older. :(
So it is wise to look a church over thoroughly before committing to it to make sure it has the facilities and services that would appeal to you.
I know that somehow doesn't sound right, but part of what a church does is provide an environment to help you live the teachings of the church.
This is the end of the thread.
