pegasus, DaisyM - more shoes

Posted by Medusa on February 12, 2004, at 12:40:45

Hey, I hope you can deal with some more shoe talk ... I'm looking for the perfect pair of black pumps.

(Yeah, I have other stuff going on ... which is exactly why I need some happy talk.)

What constitutes for you the perfect pair of basic shoes?

2 1/2" heels are about as high as I can take, and there are so many different shapes. I want a more solid heel, and I'm such a shoe-newbie don't know the terminology for various parts of the shoe ... anyone have terms and definitions?

It's so much easier to say what I don't want - I like the opening more scooped out,
NOT like this:

and not like this:
http://a1216.g.akamai.net/f/1216/955/6h/images2.nordstrom.com/images/store/product/medium/105279.jpg

Ah, sigh ... there are so many elements to the perfect shoe. Any opinions / experience on what's most flattering?

For 'impractical' shoes, I'm looking for dressy-ish thong sandals for summer, like

OK, I'll bite! Pumps are not really my style, but I do have a few pair, for dressing up at work. I kinda liked the ones you pointed out. It seems like the ones with the more scooped out opening tend to have a less substantial heel and be more classic.

My perfect pair of all around shoes would be clogs. Like these:

http://a1216.g.akamai.net/f/1216/955/6h/images2.nordstrom.com/images/store/product/large/S12707.jpg

Only, probably in black. I normally don't dress up much, and I love shoes that slip off easily, and are sturdy, but have a little style.

For work, I'd love a pair of these:

http://a1216.g.akamai.net/f/1216/955/6h/images2.nordstrom.com/images/store/product/large/107785.jpg

or these:

http://a1216.g.akamai.net/f/1216/955/6h/images2.nordstrom.com/images/store/product/large/S11831.jpg

Unfortunately, neither one comes in my size. Sigh. They're both pretty basic, but I love a stacked heel. And I could wear them with pants or skirts. And they look comfy.

I love the thongs that you picked out. I want some of those too!

Oh my, I have these! Or their twins. They're my basic work-horse shoes, but so ... boring! (When I'm wearing a boring suit, which is pretty much ALL the time, they don't contribute anything to the outfit.) It also depends on where one is ... when I was in Boston, I wished I had them with me instead of my kickier footwear.

I'm also in search of the perfect comfort clogs, that also look okay. I had a pair of Dansko-style open-back ones for a few years, and wore the heck out of them. These
http://a1216.g.akamai.net/f/1216/955/6h/images2.nordstrom.com/images/store/product/color/33495-1.jpg
look quite a bit nicer than mine did.

Yeah, I do tend to go for the basic boring shoes in terms of work. But I have a weird size, so really I can't be picky. If I could get a pair of those basic loafers, I'd be thrilled. The ones I can usually get are not as well made, nor as versatile.

But things are getting better these days. It used to be that I always had to get the ugliest shoes in the store, which is one reason why I love pretty, quality shoes so much now. When I go to Nordstroms I always tell them to bring anything they have in my exact size, and if I like it and it fits, I'll buy it. I'm not picky about style and cost is no object. They get all excited, but I know I'll never find more than one or two pairs that fit. And the really expensive shoes never come in my size. But I'm serious, if they did, I'd buy 'em!

I'm wearing my old favorite shoes right now, and I just love the way they feel. I love the way they sound when I walk. :)

My favorite subject! I think 2- 21/2 inch heel is fine. I like pumps that have a rounded toe and aren't too scooped out. I have on my favorite red ones right now - Red leather with a high square heel - I spent the day at the capital and they were perfect - made an authoritative sound!

I think basic black velvet pumps or strappy backs are great too. They dress up anything.

I love the clogs you picked - very "in". Would be great with longish cord. skirt.

I wear a 6 1/2 so I usually can find stuff left on sale - to small for everyone else. I'm still looking for those boots though.

And Nordstroms - the best place to buy shoes! I just got a pair of aqua pumps that have the heel kind of cut out in the middle and a bow stuck back there. They are really cute! *sigh* like I have the money for this. I told my Therapist he could at least wear different shoes each week because I'm losing my shoe budget to therapy costs!

I just opened mine (no comments, please) and there is an article: Can New Shoes make you Happy? And of course the answer is yes! I don't need therapy, I just need to keep buying shoes!!

WHO KNEW!?

Well, it doesn't take a rocket scientist (or even Oprah) to know that! Buying new shoes always makes me happy. And then when I get home, trying them on again with various outfits that they might work with - that makes me happy too.

Although, it occurs to me that maybe I only buy new shoes when I'm in a good mood. I definitely don't shop when I'm depressed. I barely get dressed. So, maybe it's being in a good mood that makes me buy shoes and not the other way around. What do you think?

Daisy, your new shoes sound great. I can't get away with colorful shoes, having rather large-ish feet. But I love them on others.

Anyway, I'm seriously thinking about trying on a pair of those clogs, now that I've been checking out the Nordstrom's site today. :) I can feel a shopping trip coming on. Must mean my meds are working!

DaisyM, I wear a size 6 1/2 and never find sale shoes! They always seem the most popular size at Norstrom in the City. {{sigh}} maybe you'll have to tell me your secret shopping spots.

By the way, that's 6 1/2 B, and I'm 5'9".

As for shoes, in general, I am a major supporter of Capezio's for comfort, especially when you have to be on your feet for any length of time, and for the fact that they seem to last *forever* -- my t-straps are just as comfortable after 16 years as they were day one, and still look good (well, after a quick polish they still look just as good as new.) Capezio has some great styles, just check their site for the Tap shoes. They've got some way cool strappy sandals, and since most of their shoes are built for professional dancers, they're engineered for comfort and ergonomics. At least, I can tell you that I've worn my Capezios to work on days I know I'll be walking around and giving speeches, and still been able to drive home with my shoes on. To me, that says it all!

Oh, yeah, and I still have several dozen other sorts of shoes, but I love my Capezios best. I think they're chic, and unusual enough to be way hot. Even after 16 years.

Post pix of what you end up getting. Maybe it'll inspire me...

OK, I bought new shoes!

This thread was so much temptation that I went out and bought some new shoes. Three pair! My husband was not thrilled. But I love them. And it was a bad day (see anniversay of friend's death post), so I needed some cheering up. Here they are:

http://a1216.g.akamai.net/f/1216/955/6h/images2.nordstrom.com/images/store/product/large/111763.jpg

in brown (good versatile summer sandal)

http://a1216.g.akamai.net/f/1216/955/6h/images2.nordstrom.com/images/store/product/large/S13958.jpg

in black, for work

http://a1216.g.akamai.net/f/1216/955/6h/images2.nordstrom.com/images/store/product/large/S11842.jpg

in brown, for kicking around town

Now, keep in mind that I can't buy just any shoe I like, because my size seriously restricts my choices. But I think I did pretty well today.

Thanks for the inspiration babble buddies!

I really like the heel on these.

mmmmmmmmm. bare-legged or with nylons? I never know what lines are okay with slingbacks, and when slingbacks are permissible.

I'm glad for your spree! and I hope to experience similar enablement here ...

I was planning to wear them with nylons. I'm not sure I could get away with bare legs. Do you think? I figure the sling backs are for slightly dressier days at work, when I'd be wearing nylons anyway. I think they'll look great with nylons and a nice business-like wool or linen skirt and silk blouse. (Not that I have a lot of those - maybe I need to go shopping again!)

On non dressy days, I wear jeans and sweaters with clogs or loafers - pretty casual.

I've been looking for some versatile brown leather sandals for ages, and I like the heel on those too.

Thanks for checking out my new shoes! I'm wishing you a productive shoe shopping spree sometime soon as well.

Check out the new Carol Little collection at Macy's - she has some great new blouses. I like skirts Goldschalks - they always have great deals. I also got a couple of nice suites at JC Penney recently for like 1/2 price. One was a classic off white wool, very nice for work. Of course I can't play with the kids in that but I wore it to Sacramento this week with a red blouse and red high heel pumps, watch out! Now I need some new navy shoes...
