prozac and sex

Posted by PeggyY on February 24, 2004, at 14:27:10

Prozac is starting to really take it's toll on my marriage. My husband has been understanding about the COMPLETE lack of sex drive, but it is starting to bother him, and me! Has anybody had ANY success counteracting this affect, Or have you tried other anti-depressants that work without the sexual side effects. Help!

Hi Peggy,
This post probably should be to the meds board, and will probably be moved there. I'll answer here though.
The different antidepressants do have different side-effect profiles. You should really talk to your psychiatrist, or whoever is writing the script. What you bring up though, is one of the most commonly adverse side-effects that people complain about. Your doc should be able to help.
Good luck,
Dee

There's a very old fashioned anti-histamine, called cyproheptidine or Periactin, that blocks the anorgasmia from SSRIs -- and quite well for me, at least. The best part is that it knocks you out after a certain amount of time, too, so there's no depressive insomnia, and it's worn off by the next morning, so you're anti-depressed again next day. Takes about 20 - 30 minutes to work, but it was great for me: orgasms again! Yippee!

The sex drive, though, is a different story. Can't help you there, or I'd be able to help me. My husband is absolutely uninterested, and I'm too depressed to care right now, but suspect that if he showed any interest in me, I might not be so depressed. Vicious circle, huh? There's another name for it, something like "ouruborous"? Just a trivial tidbit to make this a Social Post...

They're prescription, and the drug is so old that most doctors aren't even sure it's still available. The good thing, though, is that it's cheap. You could ask your doctor to prescribe a few pills, try it, and if it didn't work you'd only be out a couple of bucks.

As I said, it worked for me with the orgasm, although I think it wouldn't have done anything about sex drive issues.

Good luck!
