new to social babble..................hi all

Posted by woolav on July 29, 2004, at 7:46:15

Hello, I have always been on the medication related dr-bob site, but not this one. Currently I cant afford Therapy and my Pdoc. So, I choose pdoc because i know i need medication. But I would love to see a therapist. I have read that mental health systems in the UK and Canada are not very good, but its not all roses in the US either. I dont have health insurance now, and it sucks. In my city, they dont offer low cost mental health treatment. So, I have to pay full price for meds and dr's visits. But I dont have the money to pay a therapist also. Which i feel i need. They dont even have an CBT groups in my city at all. Are there any self help books or something that could help me with that or am I just out of luck.
Thanks
San

Hi - welcome to Social. I'm here most of the time :) A great book on CBT is "Feeling Good". You can probably buy a used copy and save some $$. It's a great resource, I find I refer to it time and again.
(And use this space too!!)There's lots of advice and support around here. Pick and choose, join in, ask questions. CBT-specific questions will probably get redirected to the Psych board.

Hi woolav and welcome! I second the recommendation for "Feeling Good". It saved my life once. Also, I'm wondering if you might be able to find a therapist who has a sliding scale fee structure. Some therapists do, to help people who can't afford a regular therapist fee. If you're up to it, you might call around and ask. Any therapist who doesn't offer a sliding scale might at least be able to refer you to another therapist who might.

Good luck, and please let us know what you end up doing.

I have found "A Guide to Rational Living" by Albert Ellis pretty helpful. I use it as a complement to my therapy and it has been great in reinforcing everything I'm learning with my Therapist.

The langueage is sort of old fashioned but this makes it quirky to me. The first edition was written in the 60s I believe. But Albert Ellis is the Daddy of CBT and therfore worth the read.
