Night out- dinner with relatives; ativan or xanax?

Posted by daemon on July 30, 2004, at 7:19:56

Hi folks,
there's a big dinner happening soon with
relatives and already I'm dreading it.

I have SAD and I hate these events even though
they are with people who are related to me!

The barrage of questions (am I married yet, driving my
own car, have a job etc) feeling uncomfortable,
awkward not knowing what to say and so on.

I am planning on trying out Nardil- just
got to get off my current med (Elavil/Endepp)
first [I'm down to 50mg of that]- but
for now I thought I might try to see if I can
a doctor to prescribe a benzo on the basis that
I use as needed (say no more than 3 days a week)
but only when I really need to.

I'm trying to figure out whether ativan or xanax would be best-
something that would last the evening and stop me from feeling like
getting drunk.

Anyone know?

I feel for you, relatives can be worse than strangers sometimes! They think they have the right to pry, but they don't. I think taking an anti-anxiety would be good if your doctor agrees. I couldn't tell you which one to use though. I use Xanax myself. It works well but can make you sleepy. And if you drink it can really mess you up (increases effects of alcohol). Plus both those meds have a potential for abuse, but it sounds like you are aware of that.

I recently have been distangling myself from my nosy mom. If she starts a conversation I don't want to discuss, I just say, "I'm not going to discuss that with you" and then I don't. It makes her pretty mad, but it has stopped the intrusiveness to a certain degree. You could also rehearse some planned responses so that you won't be hanging there trying to figure out how to get out of answering an uncomfortable question. You could come up with something that doesn't really answer, but veers them away from the subject. Like if they ask you when you're getting married you could say, "You know, I'm really enjoying the freedom of being single. I just started this art class and (blah, blah, blah chatter about the class)".

Anyway, these are just some suggestions. I hope it goes well!

I had a nosy mother-in-law and my priest told me to tell her this..after she had made some big pronouncement about my life..."you might be right".......it so worked. It confused the h*** out of her and she never could figure out if I was agreeing or disagreeing. I've used it ever since and believe me it works and along with it, I say "why do you ask?".......that will shut them up too.

I will keep that in mind- I thought the
sedation wears off after you've been taking it
for a while?

Thanks for your advice and info :O) I have sometimes used 'scripts' for making phone calls before and they definitely help.

Damian.
