Kitty

Posted by TexasChic on August 10, 2004, at 9:41:27

A lady at work brought in a kitty that she found at her house. Its about 8 weeks old, a boy, and is orange with little white feet. Its so darling! I want a kitty so bad! I've been dreaming about it. But I haven't been in my apartment even a month yet, so I'm worried about being able to handle the expense. But I'm so lonely and want to keep him! I've about decided to take him home and if I can't afford it then I'll decide what to do when the time comes. Of course, once I take him home, I won't want to give him up ever. I'm just torn between being logical and following my heart!

Sorry, but where cats are concerned, the heart always rules. They have been my most bestest friends through thick and thin. I have lots and lots of experience with kitties. Protect your furniture if you're raising a kitten!!!

Seriously, I think they are a good choice for a live-alone person because they are purr-fectly happy all by themselves while you're slaving away all day, and even if you're gone overnight.

(Jeez, I'm a bad influence, aren't I???)

No, I feel the same. I had a cat for 11 years, from high school on into my 20's. She was my best friend and I can still cry over missing her if I let myself think about it. I've been thinking alot lately about getting one, and to have one fall into my lap like this is almost like a sign or something! I'm just not feeling very responsible these days, but maybe this is what I need to get out of that. I definately need something to get my mind off my problems, that's for certain.

One of the things I have cherished about my kitties over the years is how tuned in to my moods they have been. You might even find that having that warm little cat body will make you feel more settled into your new home and life.

hi Texas chic,
can you work up a spreadsheet and see if the expense for the kitty is do-able? That way you could take him without any fears that you'd have to give him up.

Here's another idea: A friend of mine recently took in a cat from some kind of rescue shelter place. They actually gave her food, and a litterbox, and all kinds of supplies. She's going to be a sort of "foster mother" for the kitties and may eventually keep them. But expenses are REALLY low, at least at first, b/c of all the stuff that's provided. I think the cats are also spayed/neutered for free, too, and initial shots are given by a vet.

I know you might already love this little kitty from work (it sounds soooo cute), but if it doesn't work out with this one, would you be interested in that rescue shelter thing? If you ARE interested, I can ask my friend more details, and find out if they have a web site and if it's a coutry-wide thing.

Good luck!
Jen (kitty lover) Star

Yes, I'd love to hear more about that. Let me know if its a nationwide thing.
As for the expense, I think I'll be able to swing it, a few people at work have told me of a couple of places to go for low cost shots. The biggest expense is the deposit at my apartment, $250-$300. I haven't decided yet whether or not I'll try to get away with not paying it. I know its more expensive if you get caught. I'll have to think about that for a while.
Thanks for your suggestions!

kittys are so cute! I definitely know what you mean about torn between being logical and following your heart. Don't we all just wish we could do anything we want, spend our money on whatever we want, whenever...I know I do. Maybe this kitty is worth it tho? ;)

I have a theory that it is *physically* impossible to stay stressed when you have a cat in your lap.

So, think of it as a worthwile investment.

Hey TC! If you haven't guessed, I'm a big cat lover and have had cats my whole life. I agree with what has been said already, they can be such wonderful company. I've heard people say that cats are not loyal and I completely disagree with that. Every cat I have had was more loyal than the dogs I've had! :)

That said, do you have a contingency plan in case the kitten has health problems? I absolutely love the cat I have now, but he has definitely had some health problems even when he was a kitten (cataracts, cystitis, diabetes). Some have been very, very expensive!

I just wanted to bring that up since I'm sure you would be heartbroken if you had to give him up!

Good luck, and let us know what you decide!

Well, he's at my house now so I guess I've decided. He hid under the couch all night and wouldn't come out. If I get him and hold him he'll purr, but once I put him down its right back under the couch! I hope he does okay at home alone all day. I can't wait to get back home and see what he's gotten in to!

I've been considering 'Dante', but I'm not yet sure if that's it. Right now its more like 'whiny scared little baby kitty'. When he adjusts to me maybe he'll tell me.

Congratulations! I'm sure he will adjust to you soon. Did he get into anything interesting while you were gone?

Auntie Mel,
you're so right about kitties! Mine help me relax too. They're so much fun. I'm glad there are kitties in the world.
