Passing the time

Posted by Klokka on August 12, 2004, at 16:42:11

This month isn't usually a good one - I have SAD and tend to be really unstable in August before becoming more mildly, steadily depressed - and a bunch of stuff has been going on to complicate that. Plus my pdoc is on vacation so I can't really talk about it until September. I'm on antibiotics after getting my wisdom teeth out, so for the next week or so I will need to be awake at 8 and midnight, so my usual tactic of sleeping all the time isn't working. I really need to kill time and relax.

Writing's good, but I can't quite do that all day. I've recently tried baking and found it really soothing, so that will help, but I can't think of anything else right now. Any suggestions? What works for you when you need to pass the time?

Ouch! Sorry about the teeth and the instability.

Last time I needed a soothing, somewhat mindless activity I made origami boxes. There are several books. The best-known is probably "Origami Boxes". (How's that for an original title?) You can put small things in them or give them away.

That link to Amazon.com is linking to the wrong book. The one called simply "Origami Boxes" by Tomoko Fuse is more introductory.

Thanks for the suggestion. That looks really cool! I found some cheaper books at Chapters and might check one out. I have a bunch of origami paper left over from a horrible failed English (don't ask, LOL) project this year. Does it use those little square papers or something else?

The teeth really weren't a problem. Apart from me freaking out before it started, the operation went well and I didn't feel a thing. I caught the infection early, so it caused very little discomfort, it's just that I have to take the antibiotics all the same. The instability is rough, but I guess the upside is that when I'm not feeling horrible, chances are I'm doing okay. I imagine things will be much easier once I start school and am swamped with stuff to do, as well. (Looking forward to homework? Yeah, that'll last... oh, I don't know, a week, MAYBE.)

What's Chapters?

It uses square papers. The standard size is 6", but you can use any size.

You are lucky that you can concentrate on homework. When I'm depressed I can't concentrate on anything.

It's bookstore chain. I'm pretty sure it's a Canadian thing, though.

I'm sorry to hear that. Sometimes I can't, either, and it's so hard to deal with. (Let's just say that I would not have been able to graduate from high school were it not for some very sympathetic teachers.) Usually I can focus on schoolwork and it's a useful distraction, but it takes a good couple of hours of worry and procrastination before I get to that point. I've never figured out how to skip the middle step and just get back to work. It's strange.
