Best wishes for anyone in the path. Hurricaine Party!! Have fun.
Now, the latest weather report, followed by a storm chaser drool...
Charley's moving onto land now. It looks to be a but further south than they originally said. I think I just heard something about Orlando. Now that he's on land, his strength will reduce rather quickly.
[Note this comes from a person in hurricaine country and has been few several. I have great respect for the storms, but also a facination]
Have you seen the pictures of this Dude? Well formed, visible eye. A hurricane chaser's dream.

you can look at the Gulf of Mexico pictures, or the Storm floater 2 pics. Nasa probably has some good shots (www.nasa.gov)
If you go look, wave at me.

Thanks for starting this, Nikki. I'm worried too as my sister and her boyfriend are in Ft. Myers. I don't think they had much chance to evacuate since the storm changed direction from the predicted path. Dang storm! Anyway, I tried to call her cell, and all the circuits are busy. So I just watch and wait and pray.

Whew! She and her boyfriend are fine, although without power. There are several trees down in her complex, some of them on cars, but they parked away from the building and trees...smart girl!
Funny story. My mom "reminded" her that she won't be able to flush the toilet without additional water since the power is out. So she had my sis fill the tub for just in case. We grew up in a small town that had no municipal water, so we had a well. The pump for the well ran on electricity so in this house, Mom's right, we coulnd't flush the toilets. Now my hubby just broke me of that belief in the last few years because it's so ingrained in since we were kids. I called her and told her she could flush and we laughed and laughed! She didn't really know how it worked either. I wonder if my brother still does that?
Now, about my friend in Orlando...Hope it dissipated at least a bit before it hit there.

Thanks, Nikki, for helping me come out of my fog. I hadn't realized that it was hurricane season (gee, is that why it has been raining like crazy in New England???). And I have a son in Georgia - gee, maybe I should be paying attention. Looks like he got some rain, but not much wind.

That's what boycotting the news will do for you.
I hope all are well?

One of my best friends lives in Ft. Myers - right on the inland waterway. I've tried to call her but of course the phone lines are dead and I don't have a cell phone number for her.
I keep trying to remind myself that she's extremely level headed and isn't one to discount the dangers of hurricanes.
Beyond being concerned for her of course, I just hope there hasn't been too much damage to her house.

Maybe I should lift the ban on news to allow the weather channel. Hurricanes are something to be respected.

Regarding your funny story, it is still possible to lose your water in a bad storm. In my case, we lost water during hurricane Isabel because we get our water from a nearby city. When the storm hit, the water flooded the city's generator at the water treatment plant and there went the water!
When I realized that we wouldn't be able to flush, I ran around like a maniac filling everything I could with water before our water "petered" out!
I really feel for everyone in Florida and I'm glad your sister is ok!

Actually, you mom is right. I know it all too well, I'm afraid - living on the south coast.
When a storm this big hits, it knocks out power ALL OVER the city. Including the pumping stations for the water.
Luckily for all of us, sewage is moved by gravity.

Oh my. I never thought of that. I was just thinking of all the simple outages we get here, and my husband thinks I'm crazy. But then, that is nothing new. :)
My sis sounded pretty good on the phone last night. But I think she didn't realize how emotionally draining it was for her until she went out and saw the damage today. She said it looked like about a 100 tornadoes had hit. Last night the glass sliding doors in her apt. were bowing inward quite alarmingly. And the wind was so loud, they never heard the tree right outside their lanai crash down. She said it went on for a long long time. I can't imagine. But they were lucky as they had no damage to their building or cars and obviously are unhurt. Trees down, but not on their stuff.
She and her bf decided to get out of Dodge once the main road opened back up. They are in a hotel in Ft. Lauderdale, ironically with an ocean view. I think I'd rather not see the ocean right now if I were her, but then again, how often can you get that view?
They both filled their cars with gas the day before which was fortunate. Today, she said there was only one gas station open for miles, and the cars were about 30 deep at each pump. They only found one store open, too, and that was slim pickin's.
I heard that the beach was off limits to residents etc. while the clean up was going on. I fear for my favorite restaurant, The Mucky Duck on Captiva. I think it might have had quite a hit as it sits right on the point of the island.
Still no word on my in-laws condo. They are not there, and the woman who takes care of it while they are in another state has been unreachable. I think my sis will try to drive by and check it out when she comes back.
I hope anyone else with loved ones in the area get good news. That was sure something.
Take care,
gg

Mair,
I'm sorry you haven't been able to reach her. Even cell numbers, if you had one, aren't working consistently. Fox News was posting numbers for the Red Cross, FEMA, etc. You might be able to find something out through them if you don't hear something soon. I would offer my sis to drive by, but if she is on the inland waterway, there may not be access right now.I'll keep my fingers crossed and say prayers.
Take care,
gg

Phone service after is so spotty. And cell phones can be worse than land lines.
All the coastal spots had mandatory evacuation, so the odds are greatly in her favor that she is fine.

It's just one of the things people here are born knowing. The rest of the must have list:
Plenty of fresh drinking water. It can be a long time before it's restored.Clorox - in case you don't have enough fresh water.
Batteries - lots for flashlights and radios. Candles used to be recommended, but now they're worried about fire and no water hoses. I use candles anyway - and have a wind-up radio.
Canned food. But don't buy anything you won't eat anyway. Conversation with co-worker - H: My wife made me by spam before the storm, and now I'm going to be eating it for months!!! M: Do you normally eate spam? H: no.. M: then why do you think you will eat it during a hurricane....
A full tank of gas. Pumps may not be working, and the tanks might have water in them if they do work.
And AllWays watch the weather.

I tried again today - phone lines are still dead. I sent her an email knowing she won't be able to retrieve it for awhile, but hopefully it'll remind her to get in touch with me when she can.
When i was a child, my family travelled to Florida every summer to visit my grandparents. We used to think hurricanes were so exciting, although we were never there for any of the truly awful ones. However, I do recall that it took days for power to be restored. One year, some of my grandparents' neighbors laid a trap for the city electric truck so it was forced to deal with that neighborhood's power problems more quickly than it might have otherwise.

She's the only one I know who lives over there, and when I saw the news, I was really worried. But she was evacuating last time she posted.
I had no idea hurricanes could be that bad! I hope you're okay PC!

I know, I've been really worried about her. But I think she was going on vacation, right? So she kind of evacuated and then left on vacation, if I followed things correctly.
I imagine it must be hard to be away from home when something like that happens. I hope her home is alright and that she's not worrying too much.

I am safe and sound and back from vacation. We were the first area to be evacuated. We made hotel reservations further inland, then had an offer from my husband's cousin to stay with them. The storm landed 70 miles south of us, and later on hit the area where we were going to have stayed. Nature is so unpredictable. The power of a storm the likes of Charley is so awesome and frightning.
Glad to be home again - had a fantastic meetup with NikkiT2 in London!!!!
love you all and your kind wishes.
