Geezz...tonight at work....and the day before...and the day before..etc...gals sitting around reading 'Bridal' magazines like they are bibles or something. Ughhhhh. Watch...10-20 years from now they will be bitchin and complaining about their spouse and marriage *so* much....makes me wanna hurl!
My take on it...live 'common law' for a good ten years, and have a child in that situation. You are bound by real love and honesty, not some piece of paper that says you "must".
IMHO...

part of me wants the faily tale (fat elvis, vegas style) part of me agrees with you special j.
i'll make up my mind one day. but, i'm a walking contradiction. of course, i'd only marry someone i love anyway. or someone filthy rich. but, i love money, so it's the same thing, right?

I've had "common Law" for 17years and it still is good.
The only hitch is when your spouses health is involved. Marriage has built in agreements. "Common Law" does not. So if my partner became ill I would have no rights. I couldn't be with him in the hospital or make decisions about surgery etc...We were both married before and that was complicated and expensive to get out of.
Now I would boycot marriage because Gay people can't have the same rights. What a funny democracy...rights for some people some of the time and others none for most of the time.

I did the whole thing (on a small scale - 75 guests) for my second marriage - the first was just a jp. We just considered it a good excuse to have a heckofa big party. Food (not sit down), open bar (the bartender was amazing - order once and the next time by the time someone got to him the drink was fixed.). And an Irish band.
We didn't follow the rules - we just wanted to have fun.
