Anxiety Isolation - like cases?

Posted by becksA on September 17, 2004, at 1:43:48

Just wondering if anybody was sharing this same experience...I started suffering from social anxiety when i moved back to the states after living in Europe for 8 years. My anxiety has become bad, and I simply cannot make friends, except with a couple people who I see every day and have become comfortable with. Unfortunately these people are 20 or 30 years older than me so we only get to talk occasisonly at work. It's so frustrating to me because I know I'm intelligent, extremely genuine, and when given the chance, (like in the past) I can make many friends, and very close ones at that!

Did something happen, or a series of coincidences that maybe you registered in a negative way, occur when you moved? Anything that might have made you feel differently about yourself, than you did before?

The only big thing that happened was losing all my best friends at once, and coming to a place where I can't seem to find many friendly people, so I had trouble making friends. From there it kind of snowballed.

I had *extreme* social anxiety (I could barely order in restaurants, and had to tell my parents what I wanted so they could tell the waiter, since I was too afraid to talk to the waiter...seriously). The turning point came when I did a cognitive behavioral therapy group geared specifically for social anxiety. I would not be where I am today without that therapy. I strongly suggest it.
