Parliament in the United States

Posted by Jai Narayan on November 7, 2004, at 20:27:20

I would dearly love a Parliament in the old US of A. Why did we go for the two party system anyway?
With a Parliament we wouldn't get jerked back and forth, it would have a more even flow and decisions wouldn't happen so fast. It would be representation by percentages...
52% women of all races,
% for white men,
% for blacks,
% hispanic,
%Native American,
% etc....
I would so love to see that happen in this country.
How represented are we if it's....
let's see oh another white christian male....
how about a white christian male and then another white....
you get the picture.
What do we have to do to change our system?
We need something!

parliament in canada is not all it's cracked up to be

in practice parliament:
* is only about 1/5 female
* under-represents parties with a broad national base (like the NDP, our venerable left-leaning progressive party)
* over-represents parties with a strong local base (like the successionist bloc quebecois)
* shuts down discussion on unpleasant topics by government fiat (especially when said government is a majority)
* is just as corrupt as the american system when it comes to handing out contracts to cronies (see the sponsorship scandal, the HRDC scandal)
* has a question period where questions are never answered

bah. i am not enchanted with government and politics.

thank you so much for all the information. It seems like a lot of people from my country are fleeing to your country. So I had hoped it was better.
We need something to slow down the changes in our country. I see corruption can happen in any form of government.
thanks
Jai
