Okay, I'll tell you a story about crossing into the U.S.

I drive truck (or did, until I broke my arm 17 months ago). Anyways, I was entering at Detroit, and I was presenting my import documents to the Customs and Immigration officer, and he asks for my identification. I hand him my driver's license, and his face goes quite serious. His hand goes to the handle of his pistol, and he tells me to pull up my shirt. A little stunned, I say "Huh?", and he tells me louder, to pull up my shirt. As if on cue, four other officers move into a semi-circle around me. I still don't know what I'm being asked to do, when the guy asks me to show him "my ink". He wants to see my "tatts". Well, I don't have any (and it took me a minute to figure out what he wanted), and as I'm sputtering in shock, one of the other guys just about pulls my shirt up over my head.

Turns out there's some Chicago gangster named Larry Hoover, and this guy is telling me I exactly meet the description of this dude, a cop killer (with a reward for apprehension).

They run my ID in the computer, though, and it checks out, so they end up letting me go.

I go home later, and hit Google, and there *is* such a guy. Only thing is, he's black (I'm a redhead). And he's in Joliet State Prison (near Chicago).

I've been crossing the border for over twenty years, hundreds of times, and never had a problem before.

The very next time I enter at Detroit, another guy starts doing this "alert" thing. I calmly tell the guy that I checked it out on Google, and it's a black man by that name......Wrong! It is not proper to correct a man with a gun. Off I go to a little room with 2-way mirrors, to sit and stew for a couple of hours, after they strip-searched me and left with my ID.

When the guy came back to let me go, all he said was, "Don't go anywhere, ever, without your photo ID. Not to the motel pool, nowhere."

Now, what do you think that was all about? I haven't tried to get on a plane since then. I'm afraid to.

That sounds awful!! I have had a couple odd experiences going back and forth to differnet countries but I just assume I was lucky # ??? on their list to interogate.
But WOW that would really suck having the problem with the name. And scary is an understatement.
I guess my take on the US/Canda border thingy is that (I know nothing and claim to know nothing btw) millions of people go through all day and get through.... but mental illness restrictions sounds harsh....I dont know??

jay:

i'm a crazy canucklehead that has moved to the USA for work. I've crossed the border with my meds approximately once every two weeks for the last five months.

I have NEVER, NEVER been questioned about my meds. I have had my vehicle searched at the car crossing, and had my bag searched at the airport, and they did NOT question me about my medications in either case. I watched the guy at the airport search my bag. He saw the prescription drugs but did not even look at the label or open the container.

Now I am not schizophrenic or psychotic. I'm cyclothymic (mild bipolar). However, the US government saw fit to issue me a visa. A US company saw fit to hire me. And a background check did not turn up my diagnosis.

Your mileage may vary. But I say, go ahead, party on, cross that border. I've done it before and I'll do it again. Stories like this are quite frequently just hype to sell papers.

ps - I don't have a passport and I have never been fingerprinted by the US government

Now, y'all do as she says, and have a fantastic time.

I do hope someone gets a group photo. Nobody knows what anybody looks like, or who you really are, 'cept for His Bobness. I'd just like to see you together (if possible).

If not, see y'all next year, in Toronto. We shall call it the Butter Tart Reunion Festival.

But I get mine on the open market, from legal and proper suppliers. No black market butter tarts for me. I don't need another reason to feel guilty.

This year's theme is the pixie t-shirt. Next year's theme will be butter tarts. But, we don't have to wait until then to talk about them. For example, the farmer's market is on again in the morning.

Shall I go back, or shan't I? Shall I risk it? What if there are magic butter tarts, once again? If there are, how many do I buy? Plain? With raisins? Pecan?

These are the toughest questions I have faced in a very long time.

i vote you visit the market in the morning and scarf up two plain, two raisin and two pecan.

the two plain you can have, the two pecan i can have and the two raisin we can sell to the highest bidder (notice how this has become a 'we' transaction. With me getting a cut of the profits.) heh heh heh.

And just how do you propose to get your lips 'round those magic pecan morsels? Hmmm?

Yes, I went out to the market this morning. And yes, there were heaps of tarts sending beacons straight into my brain. It wasn't pretty, even from a distance.

I purchased the minimum allotment, six tarts (in one of those really durable clear trays with the fold-over lids). They come in sixs. Six for $6. If you don't get here soon, your two will already be my two. And the two for auction....well.....what two? <wink>

I had a little conversation with the vendor.

I thought the tarts too tender to travel. But I am labouring under a misapprehension.

I am not the first to ponder the transport of these delicate but magic morsels.

The process is to freeze the little beggars solid, and to ship them overnight express. Apparently, successful shipments to the U.S. are being done. Large shipments go out with some regularity. Or so I am told.

I didn't know you could ship prepared foods across the border. Maybe they're not declared? Maybe you don't have to declare anything special?

So, perhaps, with the appropriate begging strategy, I can be convinced to cooperate?

And, do you calculate it on the your weight before you ate them, or on your weight after you ate them?
