Dissociative Identity Disorder

Posted by daff on June 20, 2005, at 22:18:24

Hi,
I have dissociative identity disorder and would be grateful to hear from anyone in the same position. What I'd like to know is wether anyone else has trouble sleeping ? I use to be able to get 5-6 hours a sleep a night with antidpssnts & sleeping tablets - but now they are not even working ? Any feedback would be appreciated. Over the years I have worked my way through what feels like every ssri, tricyclic and maoi antidepressant on the market - and none of them work long-term. I end up not being able to sleep at all- and with this nasty bright red rash on my neck along with a number of other side effects. I took a drug called Haldolperidol a few weeks ago for anxiety and ended up so agitated I thought I might actually climb the wall !. I am in on-going therapy which is a godsend - but would love to hear from anyone with DID who can relate to what I'm trying to say.
Thanks for your time.
Daff

Hi Daff,

Welcome to babble :-)

>I have dissociative identity disorder and would be grateful to hear from anyone in the same position.........

There are a couple of people here with DID. I hope they will reply to your post soon :-)

>I use to be able to get 5-6 hours a sleep a night with antidpssnts & sleeping tablets - but now they are not even working ?

You might want to post on the main psycho-babble board for more information about medication.

That side effect is called akathisia. It's awful I know. Haloperidol often causes akathisia. What dose did you take?

Kind regards

Thank you so much for your reply ed-uk - it was such a relief to that the haldol can cause that ghastly agitation. I will post on the main psycho-babble board. I was so anxious when I posted yesterday that I did not realise that I hadn't. Thanks again for your help.

You're welcome :-)

It's awful! That horrible restlessness where you can't keep still.

>I will post on the main psycho-babble board.

Please do, it's a good place to get information.

Kind regards

Hello. Hope you are still checking this board...

I don't have trouble sleeping anymore, but I most certainly used to. I'd not be able to get to sleep until around 3am and then feel just terrible if I had to drag myself out of bed before 10. I started taking Imovane / Zopiclone. It worked really well to start with and I was asleep in 20 minutes. After four years... I was on 2 per night and still struggling to get to sleep at 3am.

But if I didn't take them then there was no chance of sleep.

Eventually I just managed to take a week out and stop them completely. After that it took about 3 months and a routine which REQUIRED me to get up at a reasonable hour to get me sleeping properly. I only have trouble now when I'm really thinking or worrying about something.

Thats just my experience with sleeping tablets.

Since then the times that I've really needed something to help me I've taken an anti-histamene(?) just to help me out a little. They have helped.

Probably understandably in light of my experience... I am very wary of sleeping medication.

I think what helped me through the withdrawals was meditation. I would lie still and just focus on my breathing. That was the aim - not sleep though when I felt myself wanting to drift off I'd go with that. I didn't sleep much - but I was getting rest so that was ok.
