Arachnaphobia?

Posted by Sarah T. on August 14, 2005, at 2:43:06

Have any of you noticed an increase in the number of spiders this year? In years past, I remember seeing more spiders inside when the weather gets cold. For the last month or so, I've seen at least several spiders a day indoors, and most of them have been big hairy spiders. OK, they're not as big as the tarantula that crawled up James Bond's arm in "DR. NO" but a few of them are as scary as the one in the movie. Anyway, what's going on? Why are all these spiders invading my house? Might it have something to do with the unusually hot, humid weather we've been having?

I hate spiders!

HATE THEM! Have you ever seen the movie from the 70's called Kindgom of the Spiders? Yikes! I have several stories that would make your skin craw about spiders. Please don't anyone say they are "good" because they eat all the other bugs, because other bugs don't hang on webs waiting to attack people from the ceiling! Nasty!

I woke up the other morning and opened one eye and saw a HUGE spider making its way across my pillow towards my face! Well, maybe it wasn't actually huge, but its body was about an inch long, which seems pretty big to me. I have never jumped out of bed so fast...

Fortunately I don't hate spiders. But if it had been a sl*g... shudder!

I'd just like to plug the double double quotes feature at this site:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#amazon

The first time anyone refers to a book, movie, or music without using this option, I post this to try to make sure he or she at least knows about it. It's just an option, though, and doesn't *have* to be used. If people *choose* not to use it, I'd be interested why not, but I'd like that redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration:

Thanks!

Hi Tamar,

Ooooh! What a rude and scary awakening you had! Ugh. I would have been really upset by that. One of my Biology professors spent his career studying bugs. Oh well, to each his own. I suppose if you study them, that's easier than waking up next to them on your pillow.

Anyway, I hope you've recovered from that nasty incident.

Sarah

Hi Wildcard,

That's terrible! What did the EMS do? Are you OK now? I've been feeling phobic because I've seen so many spiders inside in the past few weeks, and I'm just not used to seeing so many at this time of year. I thought they tend to come indoors in the fall and winter. Perhaps I'm mistaken. I hope my cats don't decide to play with the spiders because they'll probably get bitten before they can kill the spider.

Quite a few years ago, I had a friend who had so many cockroaches in her apartment. One day, her husband, who was in the Navy, was visiting her for the weekend. They were having Sunday morning breakfast when a big fat cockroach fell into the omelet my friend was cooking. She was so disgusted by this that she moved out the very next day!

I think spiders are scarier than cockroaches. Cockroaches are more disgusting, but spiders really do scare me.

I hope you're feeling alright.

S.

hey! besides getting the heebie jeebies, i'm fine. i only called EMS b/c i am surrounded by woods and it was black and having never been bit B4 and not knowing if it was a black widow i figured i'd be safer than sorry. it's just so weird b/c i saw the ugly thing in my tub and B4 i got in, i washed it down but it came back up and i swear, jumped up onto my calf. i pissed that thing off...i see bunches of spiders and some deadly snakes but i havnt been bit! i worry too b/c i have 7 outside kitty's(the fixed mama and her 6 boys) but they actually alerted me to a copperhead about a foot in front of me and i dont wear shoes so i was VERY lucky. my house was sprayed 2day!!! yeah cockroaches are pretty gross-i wld. have moved out too!!!!!

cockroaches are disgusting. Spiders are beautiful. People would still be wearing fig leaves if someone didn't watch a spider spinning webs and make the appropriate analogy to thread.

It must have to do with the number of legs spiders have. people also hate octopi.

....I kinda like them. I felt like you growing up, but now it's like 180 degrees for me. Okay, I don't *love* them. And I have a healthy respect for them. Yes, they can still scare me (a bit) and startle me - for sure - but it stops there. I guess, over the years of being a single parent, raising child who was DEATHLY afraid of them (she'd have nightmares, shake, freak out, etc.) I killed so many, the fear was "pounded" out of me, as I pounded the poor spiders with shoes, books, etc.

Where I live now, too, we have so many wolf spiders (near a big open field) and they love my screened in porch. I'm to the point I can be out there, sweeping, or sitting, or whatever, and even if one crawls over my hand, I'm okay with it.

But you're the *normal* one, for sure, not me. The kids at my church, when they found out I didn't hate spiders, and wasn't too scared to approach them...were amazed. Goes against the stereotype for women, maybe? In fact, when a new child would come to some activity, one of the boys would always grab them, point to me, and say, "That's Miss "My First Name," and she LIKES spiders. And I'm not kidding!" LOL. It was so cute.

Happy, I'll drop by and kill one for you if you want...I wouldn't mind ;-)

until that one jumped on me and bit me(w/ my eyes closed) i would pick them up and chase my youngest brother who has a fear of anything that is in the insect,spider,bug..family. i'm ok now-just took a few days to get over the heebies...now i've excepted *we* have to live 2gether so hopefully this will be the last time that happens. :)

Okay, even your post CREEPS me out! lol I think I need to see my T about this, maybe do EMDR about it.
I remember when I was about 14 yrs old, we lived out in the woods. Well I was outside playing and a sudden thunderstorm came upon me. It was lighting, I was scared, so I ran home along the path. Well I ran into a huge web that stretched across the path that contained a huge black spider. Well the web with the spider was stuck to me on my shirt! I panicked and took off my shirt and ran for dear life! It totally freaked me out!
So I don't know, I am a gardener, and I do appreciate what they do for me in that form, but they need to stay outside away from me! LOL

Yeah, I'm sure being bitten would change my perspective quite a bit. Isn't it crazy how some insects (ants and daddy long-legs spiders are masters at this!) can be supposedly *drowned* (yeah, right!) and yet reappear whenever they want! That's just wrong. Although I don't hate them, I think we are rightfully supposed to be their masters...somehow.

You sound really brave and even nonchalant about being bitten. I think I would freak out more than you did. Glad you're okay. Calling EMS was the thing to do, for sure.
