I am a die-hard devotee of this 100% listener-sponsored (no government or institutional grants, no corporate ties, no advertisers), "free-form" (no format, each DJ does whatever they want) radio station. I cannot recall the last day I _didn't_ listen to it.
This is the one time of year this station interrupts regularly scheduled programming to solicit funds (most public and/or listener sponsored stations do this 2-4 times per year) from listeners. Their annual operating budget is ~$1,000,000, and each year they try to raise $850,000 during a two-week period in March known as the "marathon". This year--perhaps due to the hostile global sociopolitical climate--they are substantially behind schedule (this is day 10 of 14). Please, give this station a listen on the air or over the internet (http://www.wfmu.org/) and contribute if you like what you hear.
I am posting this because I don't know what I would do if they went off the air. If you're yearing for entertainment beyond the pallid mainstream and "conformist alternative" commercial and government-sponsored offerings, do check out their archives, live programming, full program schedule, blog and other web goodies.
Personal favorites of mine:
--Irwin Chusid's "Muriel's Treasure" Calypso/Soca Hour 2PM-3PM Wednesday
--Jeff Sarge's "Reggae Schoolroom" 9AM-12PM Sunday
--"The Dusty Show" with Clay Pigeon, Monday Evenings
--Mike Lupica's show Monday, 8PM-11PMThose of you with [young] children looking for excellent age-appropriate programming should check out "Greasy Kid Stuff" Saturday mornings (I listen to this regularly, heh).
If you pay $40 to $80 or more per month for cable television, I urge you to consider funding these folks--you'll get a lot more than you bargained for.

I'm sure it's a good cause, but please don't request money from others here:

But please also don't take this personally, this doesn't mean I don't like you or think you're a bad person.
Follow-ups regarding these issues should be redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration.
Thanks,
Bob
