Do all mammals eat.... *gross trigger*

Posted by Deneb on June 13, 2006, at 23:41:30

Do all mammals besides humans eat their placentas after they give birth?

Are humans the only mammals that don't eat our placentas? Do you think there was a time when humans did eat our placentas?

I think gorillas eat their placentas.

I don't know, but I do use a hair conditioner called Henna -N- Placenta. It isn't human placenta though.

And I think there were cruel rumors that Tom Cruise ate Katie's placenta.

That's all I can add on the topic of placentas.

I found some info

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placentophagy

Ick, some humans do eat their placentas. They even have recipes. I don't have anything against eating placenta, it just doesn't appeal to me. LOL

I didn't know about that Tom Cruise thing. That guy just gets weirder and weirder.

"human placenta tastes like beef"

Gosh, the things you learn from Wikipedia.

They also have the story of the TomKat placenta incident in the Tom Cruise article.

I have a friend whose mom was kinda "out there". She took the placenta home, and buried it in the front yard. A lemon tree miraculously sprouted there. I think it was in Southern California. I even had a cocktail with a twist of... placental lemon... some 20 years later, the lemon tree was alive and well. My friend's family had long since moved, but whenever he went back to SoCal, he hopped the fence and stole a few of 'his' lemons. :)

Even with Top Gun in mind, I wouldn't be put off (lost all shame).
I reckon I could get heaps of bloody maries out of one; lots of worcestershire sauce, of course.

oh, come on phillipa,
you started the thread about peeing in the shower?

well, placenta is just another bodily function!

somewhat rarer than urination, but natural, nonetheless!

avert your eyes if you must!

-ll

ps placental lemon is the tastiest lemon I EVER had. sweet, tart, extremely fragrant. Had a lot of seeds, but seriously- incredible.

Hi PJ, let me steer the subject in a wholesome direction. When our son was born the doctor flipped the placenta over, or turned it inside out, to show us the interesting striated fibres. Beautiful in its own way, its functionality. I've become progressively less worried about bodily functions as I've got older. I dunno if it's the influence of Big Brother (The TV program, general shamelessness etc) or whether it's a preparation for personal decay, or what. I'm going to take a great interest in my decline and will enjoy being a difficult patient.

If I go back to nursing I'll turn your wheelchair upside down so you'll fall out and roll down a hill. Love Phillipa

Hi Deneb

I used to know a woman who ate the placenta each time she had a baby.
