Are Lots of People Having Company or Going Away?

Posted by Phillipa on November 18, 2006, at 12:03:45

So what is your Thanksgiving tradition. We have none now since we moved. So I wondered are people traveling to family or staying home? And does everyone cook a large meal? Thanks Phillipa

Thanksgiving is a sad time of year for us. We used to spend it with my inlaws, and now they're all gone.

So we cook a turkey and a few side dishes, nothing fancy, then go to the movies.

I guess we'll invite my mother and uncle over this year for the turkey part.

I'm going home.

This will be the first time I have been home for thanksgiving in years. I usually have a business trip the first week in december and I can't be away from work that long.

But this year, the meeting got moved to last week - and for only three days!

It's turkey for me all day!

I already had my turkey day. Man, it was good. Since I'm in school it almost always involves going home, or a friends home, which means travelling.

Since my last living grandparent died this past year, I dont have any extended family who are around except my parents and brother, who still lives at home. We used to always have dinner at my uncles home, but my grandfather (who recently died) was the only thing forcing that get-together, and we wont be doing is this year. So it will only be my parents.

I believe I'll be spending the day alone this year. I could drive the 2 hours and see my parents, but I dont think I will. I'll be sad to be alone on the holiday, but I'd be uncomfortable at home, and I'm not sure the sadness is any worse than the discomfort. I guess I'll see how I'm feeling that day.

If I stay home, I'll probably just cook myself a small but tasty meal and rent some movies.

I'm ending a long tradition of lonely holidays by travelling to visit family this year. I'll be doing lots of driving and trying to fit in years' worth of catch-up into a few brief visits.

I'm away. Next year I'll probably host. (nm) » Phillipa

uasually my mother does the whole thanksgiving thing (thanksgiving's 'our' holiday because my family loves to eat and cook) but this year my sister and i are cooking it here. guest list is small, just my motehr, maybe a few friends, some cousins, an aunt and lots of kids. most people will jsut stop by to eat leftovers after visiting other family members. i've always had huge thanksgivings because my father had a few spouses prior to my mother, resulting in lots of daughters (and it's a curse having so many beautiful sisters.) so, usually two other sisters stop by. one i'm certain will be here, the other is unpredictable. a few years back, we rented a banquet hall and had a big 50th (god, i thought i was old!) party for my mom (her day is nov 25, so sometimes it falls on turkeyday.)

so, i'm sure you're tired of hearing about what my family does. i'm all about holidays, so i'm glad i'm cooking on my son's first thanksgiving.

My family is far and my mom had had enough travelling this year (that's what she said, really!). My husband's grown kids and his parents gather with us.
This year we are getting together Friday instead of Thursday, and we'll celebrate hubby's birthday too.

I try to do as much cooking ahead as I can so I'm not exhausted by the time we eat. So far, I have bought the roast (lamb this year), made a cheesecake (I think I mentioned it somewhere else), made a kugel, and an acorn squash/maple sausage side dish. At this time of year I love to cook my best :-)
