I have a question for anyone that knows. What are you not allowed to do if you have been diagnosed with a mental illness? For example, you can't become a law officer or join the military or buy a gun, etc... So does anyone know what discrimatory practices or list of things you can't do with a Brain illness (I prefer that)?
I know the illness takes more than enough away from us as is, but what other things does society make us battle that they don't do with other diseases?
Very Curious

I wasn't aware you couldn't buy a gun... I'm not sure that's right. I know you can't join the military. I also wasn't aware of the being a law enforcement officer, but that makes sense to me that it would be true. Other than that, I'm really not sure there is anything. Sometimes you have to be careful if applying for jobs, and it might just be better to omit the truth because of the stigma, but nothing I see as a huge problem personally.

Probably not be able to get a license to drive a commercial truck. As for guns, if you haven't been involuntarily sent for treatment in a MHF, you can still buy a gun in most states.

I would think it depends on the type of mental illness. Not all are are debilitating or severe. Love Phillipa

Actually its starting to change, at least as far as dysthymia, some police departments are allowing the use of SSRIs.

In North Carolina, you may have to jump through hoops to keep your driver's license if you have been hospitalized for mental illness. I have to have my docs fill out long forms every three years stating that it is safe for me to drive, even though I have never had an accident or even a ticket.
