Hi, everyone. Tomorrow is my mom's surgery to remove her thyroid and hopefully all the cancer.
Over the past few days, she's gotten really nervous which translates into panic and neediness for her. The doctors all say she's going to be fine, but I know surgery is hard and stressful no matter what.
Anyway, I was hoping you all could send some Babble strength to us. Tomorrow is going to be a long day.
Thanks, ((((Babblers)))). I so appreciate having you here.

Thank you so much, everyone! It really did help me to get through the day knowing I had support and prayers from Babblers.
My mom is fine. The surgery went well and the surgeon said the cancer hadn't spread to the lymphnodes. They're just going to have to wait for the pathology report to see if she'll need radiation.
It was a terribly long day for me. Actually, kind of lonely. I don't know if having anyone waiting with me would have helped, though. It was just stressful, you know?
I need sleep. I still have a busy day of getting her home and settled in tomorrow.
Thank you, again. You are all so sweet and kind.

May I ask if it was Graves disease or just a nodule that was cancerous? I think you should have yours checked as well as there is a hereidatary component to some. I worked with a nurse all of them had it and all were fine. So glad things went well for her. Now the replacement will begin right? Love Phillipa

She just had a few nodules the doctor wanted checked out. She hasn't been diagnosed with Graves disease.
> I think you should have yours checked as well as there is a hereidatary component to some.
I will definitely let my GP know. I've had my thyroid checked before, but I'm sure he'll keep an eye on it.

Me too. Thanks, Phillipa.

Yes. And I think because of the parathyroid stuff (actually one was removed and another was moved), she'll have to take some additional calcium - at least for a while.

^^Those are good vibes, BTW. Never too late for those.

Very prudent. And probably low risk, all things considered.

I'm pretty sure that you can get by quite well with even as few as one parathyroid gland.....monitoring definitely required, though.
Best to you and your mom,
Lar

It was just too much for me. I'm so awful and such a sh*tty daughter, but I've spent quite some time learning to establish and maintain boundaries with my mom. She always ignores them but whatever. Yesterday and today were just too hard. My husband has been out of town, my sisters weren't around today, I spent most of the night last night yelling at my son :-( and I saw my father and mother-in-law tonight and almost burst into tears. I feel like a mess.
:-(

No kidding. If you don't mind, can you keep them coming for a little bit more? At least until she can drive and get around on her own.
> I'm pretty sure that you can get by quite well with even as few as one parathyroid gland.....monitoring definitely required, though.Yeah. Her doctor told me she just needs to take Tums for three months, which of course she "doesn't like" and seems overly resistant to, and then she'll be fine.

Allow yourself to cry. And then allow yourself to be upset by the added stress to your life and your schedule. And then allow yourself to cry again.
It *is* scary when your mom has cancer. No matter how sure you are she is going to be OK, no matter what a pain in the a** she is sometimes, she is still your mom and this is scary. You have a right to be a mess. It is appropriate to be a mess.
PLEASE take care of yourself. Eat protein, drink lots of water and try, try, try to get some sleep. I hope you get to keep your therapy appointment.

You are a very good daughter, and a great mom. This is just a very trying time, and it's perfectly normal to be overwhelmed by it.
Give yourself some credit for all you *are* doing. I can't say that I would be being anywhere near as giving as you are.
This is the end of the thread.
