Nasty spill off my horse

Posted by Nathan_Arizona on July 25, 2007, at 11:16:12

I'm okay, just bruised and skinned up. More than anything I am just mad at myself.

I was doing so well and then just in one split second, I lost my balance and fell off in the canter.

Ouch! Poor me.

This is my first big fall in close to a year of riding. In order to be a true cowgirl, I've got six more to go ;).

You can just ignore me i'm just shameless pandering for sympathy.

I'm glad you're safe and reasonably sound.

Remember to take all the preventative measures I'm sure all the experienced riders have recommended to combat aches and pains as best as possible.

Pander away.

Sounds like you must be pretty resilient. Cantering is FAST, isn't it???

I think it's great you didn't break bones, etc.

Hope you're not too achey.

hugs, (gentle) Kath

I'm afraid, dear shameless one that you are quite correct. It is indeed my bum that is the most sore. Followed secondly by my shoulder and neck.

I have a lot of "ring rash" all along my right arm.

I must have bounced and slid simultaneously.

I appreciate your offer to pull out your super secret address file and come over and rub it, but really - I don't want to be touched too much right now.

Ordinarily though, rub away!

I always ride with a helmet and a buddy around, so I'm as safe as you can be on a horse.

I'll never jump as that scares the living bejesus out of me - and that is when the most serious falls tend to occur.

It's advil and hot baths for a few days, but no major damage done.

Cantering IS fast, and cantering IS FUN!

I just absolutely lost my seat and went flying. I'm still trying to remember exactly what went wrong, but it happened so fast.

I got right back up on that horse and cantered some more, but I need to get back to the stables as soon as possible and just be with my horse awhile so I don't get afraid of her.

She came up to me after I fell and nosed me like "Why are you on the ground? Get up! If the ride is over I want my carrot!"

Yep, my last mare used to get quite upset with me when she found me on the ground. "What? You're having a REST? You're supposed to be WORKING, damn it!" They don't like change -- and having you on the ground is a change...

This was your first fall? Falling gets -- different. Every time I have come off, as an adult, I find myself thinking, "Gee, that wasn't nearly as bad as I would have thought..." As a kid, I came off ALL the time. In fact, I used to come off at the first fence in my first class at damn near every show I rode in.

Now you're making me jealous. I haven't ridden in far too long. Gotta do something about that...

Yeah this was my first full on, full speed fall. I'm much better today.

I'm going to the stables in the morning just to groom and feed.

I should be able to ride on saturday again.

Yeah, I think it's time you tacked up and hacked about a bit don't you?

Also, you sound pretty brave about going out again.

That's no fun at all! It's happened to me more times than I can count- and I do think it helps to go back to the barn and be physically close to your horse (grooming), to avoid becoming afraid. In the past, I've done jumping, but now I just do dressage, At first, it seemed so boring - just going around and around in circles, but now that I know more, it is fascinating. We are always working on getting the horse stronger, as well as very light in the front- and also helping him develop his gaits so they are the most beautiiful they can be. This Sunday, I'm going to do the first musical freestyle I've ever done in a show. The music is modern
Spanish flamenco- very lively. He knows it's "his" music, and perks right up when he hears it.

A footnote- since starting dressage- no falls!

I could never be a hunter/jumper, it's just too scary.

I'm still trying to find my discipline in riding. Fortunately my instructor has a lot of experince with dressage, western riding & roping, and even carriage work with ponies (tooooooo cute!). I get exposed to a lot of different things.

I love western riding and cattle work - it's so "practical" and the saddles are like recliners ( I swear I've seen ones with cupholders), but dressage is breathtaking - especially dressage to music.

I'm all healed up from my fall, except a little ring rash on on my lower arm, and I spent some time with my horse that we both enjoyed.

I'm glad you enjoy dressage and that you've found something that you love. Good luck with your show. I hope you and your horse really shine!

Well, I owed it to myself and to my horse to go out again.

There is also practical reason. I don't really know if she bucked a little, tripped, or if I just lost balance. But, in some horses, if they learn HOW to get a rider off them, they'll start doing that if things get uncomfortable, or if they are asked to do things that don't want to do.

I don't want my horse to start bucking, so I couldn't teach her that's how to get me off and keep me off.

We got two blue ribbons- one for the musical freestyle, and one for Second Level, test 1! The musical freestyle is a complete blast- you're just dancing along to the music with your horse, and even the most depression- prone person feels beyond happy! I never thought I would love dressage as much as I do. One thing- it's something you can do safely your whole life; there was a German man who won his 7th gold medal at the Olympics when he was 73, and, the other part, it gets more and more interesting as you go up the levels. Of course, it may not be what YOU like best- but there's lots of time to try out things.
