Paranormal sewing matters

Posted by Racer on August 7, 2007, at 12:55:57

I've been doing a bit of sewing, and have come to the conclusion that there is something paranormal going on. For one thing, it seems that the pieces I cut out sit quietly for days at a time -- and then suddenly come together into a completed garment. I can't understand this. It seems as though, if it was so easy to put these things together, I'd just sit down and sew, and have new clothes much more rapidly. Instead, it takes days to pick everything up, leading to clothing taking weeks to make.

But even more mysterious is the question of buttons. I have buttons. I have a lot of buttons. I buy buttons that I think might be useful, I buy buttons that I think might work with fabric I own. I buy buttons just because I think they're pretty. And yet, somehow, I never have buttons when it's time to sew them on. Every time I finish a garment, I have to go out and buy buttons. What's up with that? You'd think, considering the enormous stash of buttons I've got around here, I'd just grab what I need, but no -- doesn't matter much at all, nothing in my box of buttons will quite do...

Does anyone else sew? Can anyone else relate to this? Can anyone here offer a scientific explanation for these phenomena?

I just want to understand!

I know exactly what you're talking about! It happens with me too, but involving dirty dishes. At night, when I go to bed, my kitchen sink is full of dirty dishes. The next morning, when I get up, they've been washed, dried and put away. This probably sounds weird, but I believe that this phenomenon can be explained through the existence of dishwashing fairies. I believe that when I am asleep at night, little fairies come out and wash the dishes for me. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairy for more information on this. It has got to be. How else can one explain this phenomenon?

I keep hoping the Brownies will show up to clean our place while we sleep, but no joy so far.

Then again, my husband stays up until far past Brownie time, so maybe that's the problem. Maybe if he'd come to bed sooner, the Brownies would come through...

I agree with Klavot the sewing fairy is creating garments for you. Leave her a note to get you some buttons too. Love Phillipa

While I have no definitve explanation as to how the pieces of fabric could suddenly come together into a completed garmet, I will comment that, in my experience, fabric has a very lively personal life and will behave in all sorts of ways as long as it suits its agenda.

Now, regarding the buttons. I think it is quite likely that your button stash as reached some sort of critical collective mass that, sort of akin to a black hole, makes it impossible to extract a single button from the collective. You can ADD buttons to the collective, but that only makes the collective stronger and less likely to give up a single button for a garmet.

I've certainly experinced this with clothing. The more clothes I put in my closet, the less likely I am to have a single thing to wear.

It is an interesting phenomenon.

I can tell you catergorically who it isn't, My nephew, he's five and has a shocking button phobia. If we go to visit, he won't come near us if we have buttons on. I hope the poor little bugger doesn't end up like his mother and siblings. But I do giggle when his mum walks into the room with a buttoned up blouse, he gives her evils because she keeps for getting
