HELP:is Canada messing up UN environmental summit?

Posted by Kath on December 11, 2007, at 20:13:39

I just received this in an email. I hope I'm not breaking any rules by putting it here?!

Right now, a major UN summit in Bali has just a few days left to hammer out
an agreement on stopping catastrophic climate change. But instead of helping
out, Canada is actually sabotaging the talks! On Saturday, experts gave us
the global "fossil" award for being the worst country in the world on
climate change.

There's still a few days left to save Canada's reputation -- and the
climate -- but we need a massive democratic roar to remind our Prime
Minister what Canada is all about, and stop him from blocking the world at
Bali. Click below to sign the petition, which will be advertized with the
number of signatures in an ad campaign across Canada this week. The goal is
to get 25,000 people to sign in the next 3 days -- before the ads run. After
you sign, forward this email to all your friends and family right away:

Prime Minister Harper's short-sighted, undemocratic and big oil-driven
policy on climate change is damaging the world and destroying our image as a
good country. We're supposed to be the nice guys, who try to do the right
thing in the world.

The vast majority of Canadians are hopping mad on this issue -- we can win
this. We just need to show Harper how serious we are that he change course.
Sign up now and forward this email to everyone you know - we've got just 3
days to hit 25,000 signatures!

Thanks for you help!

Hey Kath
Keep calm. It will pass. We had 11 years of poison, and that passed too. Now we have a government we can respect, at Bali, and a defeat for the previous government, so richly deserved, the biggest swing since 72, and praise the Lord, Howard lost his seat, the first PM since 1929 to do so.
Good morning to all on Social.

Hi Kath...

I hope you and your's are well...and yes it is true. Harper and his Conservatives are F'ing up the whole environmental thing, and that is one good reason to never, ever vote Conservative Federally, or Provincially. Canadians just don't seem to grasp what a horror show the policies of Conservatives and Harper have brung upon Canada. And they only have a Minority government! So, it looks like an election by next Spring. Stephen Dione or Jack Layton may not seem so "hot", but they sure are much, much better alternatives to what we got!

BTW...how is your son?

Best, Jay

NICE FOR POSITIVE CHANGES TO HAPPEN

Just got this email from the organization that arranged the petition!!!

I'll answer Siggi'e & Jay's email later. hugs, Kath

Wow -

This morning, in a massive U-turn in the 11th hour of extended negotiations, the Harper government finally dropped its opposition to 2020 emissions targets among Kyoto countries , and a climate change agreement was reached in Bali!

Over 110,000 of us came together over the last 4 days and added our voices to a wave of popular outrage - we supported the ads that ran in Canadian papers and at the conference in Bali, called Harper and our MPs, and built the strength of the petitions, events, banners, and marches at the summit. And it all worked!

Click the link below to see a video message from Liberal leader Stephane Dion at Bali - Avaaz is a non-partisan group and the NDP and Green Party also deserve credit for opposing Harper, but Dion had an impassioned comment for us:

Avaaz.org/en/Canada_Wins

Lots of factors helped make this happen, especially a strong resolve and pressure from other countries. In teaming up with people around the globe to save our climate - including over 600,000 other Avaaz members who pushed their governments - we've defended Canada's proud tradition of doing the right thing in the world. The struggle is far from over, but this weekend is for celebrating!

With much joy and enormous respect for everyone who signed, forwarded, donated, called, lobbied and pitched in,

Ricken and the Avaaz team

Politics really disturbs me.
The thing that gets me the most is that politicians can SAY whatever they want...then get voted in & then DO whatever they want!!

I really don't like politics at all.

I'm glad you've had a change that you're glad about.

With our current government, I'm seeing such a change of "tone" that it's upsetting. Usually I don't even pay much attention, but this time, with the petition, I thought there was a small amount of action that I could do & as it turned out, I guess enough people thought the same and there WAS a change!

How is your weather? We're having a big snowstorm today. It was forecast to be HUGE, but it's not as bad as they thought. Today we had about 5 or so inches (15 or so cm). It's early for this much snow. It's not all that unusual for us to wonder if there'll be snow for Christmas.

This is going to seem like a really LONG winter, I'm afraid.

hugs, Kath

****Scarey, isn't it!!! I hate the change in 'tone' this government (well Conservative in general, but this one really sucks) is making. It makes me feel so helpless. Just like the Harris government & all its slashes to social services, education, healthcare!!!! YUK.
I sure hope enough people think like you & I do at election time!******

> BTW...how is your son?

********kind of you to ask Jay. He's doing way better. He is still living in the house with 4 other guys. The fellow who owns the house & 2 others are older with jobs & the other guy is 18 & in school. My son likes living there.
He drinks more than I'd like to see & smokes some weed; does some ecstasy & K - which is disturbing, but seems to be achieving some level of maturity anyway.

He recently decided to get part-time work, accepted a full-time job (which was TOO much for him yet) - that didn't work out, but then he got a part-time job working cooking in a local sports-bar/restaurant. He likes the people he works with & so far likes the job. Seems to be responsible about it - even going in when he was really tired (his normal pattern would be to phone in sick).
He also has a girlfriend! This is really good for him, since having his former GF of 3 yrs leave him was devastating. New GF seems really nice - only 18 (he's 23) but quite mature-seeming. I like her. You can tell they really like each other & it's rather sweet. I hope things continue to work out between them.
The 'anxiety' stuff in me is on alert!! I wish I could just relax & be happy about it. I tend to have the nagging worry part worrying about how it will affect him if she leaves him!!
Jeez. I wish I could be RID of anxiety.

How are you doing Jay? Well, I hope.

I send hugs, luv, Kath
