One thing for me (besides paying bills) with my income tax return. I'm so excited!!!! Its my first MP3 player. So I have a stupid question. How do you download music? Can you get it for free? I feel absurdly un-knowledgeable about this. I could probably figure it out, but any advice would be appreciated!

For my IPOD, I use Itunes to download music.
download it here:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/Install it on your computer, set up an account and you can download songs (99 cents) and a whole bunch of other stuff too.
You can also use the software to rip music off of cds or burn new cds.
Any other questions just ask.

Thanks for the info Seldom! 99 cents for one song sounds kind of expensive to me. Is there anything else online that's cheaper? Or do I have to use iTunes?

I love my Shuffle and I use iTunes a lot, although I do miss album art that you can see without a magnifying glass, and also credits, believe it or not - you no longer know who is playing on the tracks when you download files like this.
Have fun! It's a whole new world.

I think the problem is that IPODs are only compatable with the file format found in ITunes (I could be wrong about that though).
However, my guess is that there is a file converter out there somewhere by now.
You don't have to buy any songs for your IPOD. You can used it to listen to your CDs, but you have to import them into ITunes first.

No, Macintosh caved in some time ago, and just about any audio file is compatible with their product :-) I usually go for the mp3 types and they play with no problemo.CS

Drives me batty - specially since I actually care who plays drums, bass, etc and who produces the sound! I actually miss LPs - call me an old timer :-)

I've been wondering the same thing. Thank you for the Ipod advice last month, but I had to buy a Sony walkman as the sound quality on my 80GB Ipod was so poor - like listening to a gramophone. I tried Napster.com, but like most of them, it just takes your credit card details so it can bill you every month (and hides the contact email address so cancelling it is a pain). I still haven't found an adequate download site.

Actually, that really really cool. I have entire libraries of music that I can listen to on my IPOD.
Thanks

or else they jsut quit working sometimes. blasted things. and i can't ever get the power to go off. i feel like an old person tryign to get a gadget to work. i fiddle with it for 10 minutes, my younger husband takes it from me, adn has the power off in 2.3 seconds.
stupid inventions. i'm in a great mood :) totally serious though, be careful when drinking, or else get a case! they are quite finicky.
and as for the free music... it's been so long since i've downloaded any, i forget how to. but i usually use limewire, if it's still up and running.

I am pretty late to this thread so sorry, but I have a lot of wisdom on this topic!
If you have a PC: You can get a subscription to Napster.com for 14.99 a month and download unlimited songs. Unfortunately, these songs are in a format not compatible with your iPod (wma) and they also will expire (stop working) when you stop paying your Napster subscription. This is due to the DRM software they put in the files.
However, you can download a free program called "Fair Use for Windows Media" (google it). When you run your tracks through it, it removes the DRM. Then they can be imported into iTunes (just use the "add folder to library" under the File menu) and they'll be yours forever.
IMHO, this is the best way to get all the music you want for about 15 bucks a month. It takes a few extra steps, but if you are a music geek it's totally worth it. When I was doing this, I'd sometimes download six or eight albums a week.
If you have a Mac, you can't do this; there's no FairUse for a Mac, and Napster will not work on a Mac
If you don't want to go the FairUse route, you can use Russian websites (the legality of these is still up for debate, but there are several currently running and legal for the near future). There's legalsounds.com, mp3million.com, and mp3fiesta.com. On these sites, tracks will run you between 9 and 11 cents apiece.
Obviously I spend way too much time thinking about these things :) Hope this helps.
This is the end of the thread.
