How much do you usually spend in a week compared to how much you earn in a week?

Some weeks i'll save, because i dont want to, really go out or anything.

But i'm saving for an apartment. I NEED to get on my own.

I would say about 40% of my income a week.

The best thing that I ever did to get my spending under control was to start using Quicken to record my expenses and follow a budget. It's not necessary to use a specific software program, though I found it helpful. I think the most important thing is to make a realistic budget which includes fixed expenses and discretionary or optional spending as well as a savings goal. You can do this in a notebook, with a spreadsheet, or with a software package. Before I started this, I would live paycheck to paycheck with no savings and increasing debt, because I had no idea how much I was spending on stuff. After, I was able to keep up with my fixed expenses, decrease my debt, and save up a pretty nice down payment for a new car, one of my proudest moments.

good luck!
