I'm not even sure where to find technical support. I'm confused. If no one here knows the answer, can you suggest a place that would help me?
OK, so right now I'm stealing wireless because there is something wrong with our connection.
We have Rogers internet through cable. I don't know anything about it. My sister's boyfriend set it up.
We have a modem and a wireless router.
About a week ago my Dad did something to the router and my sister had to snap it back shut. It opened up or something, I dunno. I wasn't there to see it.
Our modem is a Motorola SB5101 SURFboard Cable Modem
This is what I see on the modem:Power: green light on
Receive: green light on
Send: green light on
Online: green light on
PC/Activity: orange light on
Standby: lights offOur router is a Linksy Wireless-G 2.4 GHz, 54 Mbps Broadband Router with 4-Port Switch, model WRT54G
This is what I see on the Router:
Power: green light on
DMZ: light off
WLAN: flashing green light
1: light off
2: light off
3: light off
4: light off
Internet: green light onSomeone please help! I don't like stealing Internet!

Simplest stuff first. Reboot them. There are internal software files loaded at startup that can be messed up by electrical storms and such like....and I know you had some storms recently. Just turn 'em off, turn 'em on, and wait for all the flashing lights to settle down.
If that doesn't work, isolate the modem and test it first. You'll need to connect a computer to the modem for this test, via an Ethernet (10/100) cable. It looks like a honking big phone cable, with a similar plug on each end. The modem should connect with one, so you just need to find the appropriate plug on the 'puter.
If that doesn't work, leave it connected, and call Rogers customer service. Their technicians are trained to go through a step-by-step process to isolate the fault. While you're on the line with them, get them to help you troubleshoot the router set-up, too. They should do that, without any hassle.
The idea that your dad had the router box open is not comforting. There's absolutely no reason for a home user to go in there. I suspect that's where the problem is, but by following this sequence of testing, you will know soon enough.
Best,
Lar

...may I add, that he has a switching-router w/no 'puters plugged into the router's #d ports, meaning he has some kinda wireless card mounted in his laptop (guess) or desktop... He can try bypassing the wireless on the router if the modem works hooked up directly to the 'puter... Just rehook the WAN wire into the router and additional cat5 cable from a #d port on the router to the computers network card where the WAN cable had been in the first test you had him do...
Clear as mud??? Right!!!
If he gets a green-solid light on the router's #d port (all 4 show OFF for now, as he said), this can be his backup strategy if wireless stops working when he needs it most... Linksys also has a reset button that would be best pressed in with a straightened out paper clip, held in for 15 seconds, then log into the router and make the custom changes whatever that "boyfriend" did... If this is all toooo much, call Linksys and have them help...

PS: I have multiple network cards in my server as my router (running Server2003)... I don't trust wireless yet... There are places in the Nevada desert that might be secure enough, perhaps not in the flight paths from "Area 51", though.............lol... Here in "Silicon Gulch", nothing wireless is ever completely secure........

Thanks Larry
We somehow got our connection working again. I wasn't there to see what was done, but I think we disconnected and reconnected some things.
My sister's boyfriend also did something to the router.
This is the end of the thread.
