Anyone do powerlifting?

Posted by Deneb on January 24, 2009, at 3:15:15

I am reading up on weight training and I think I want to give it a go. I am a squishy weakling right now. I bet my mom is stronger than me. LOL

I want to build muscle. Muscle burns more calories. I want to be able to eat as much as I do now and be leaner. I want to be able to what is the term...bench press? my body weight. LOL I'd probably need to start small LOL, like very small.

At first I wanted to be extremely thin, but that is not healthy. I think I'd like to be strong. Maybe I'll weigh the same weight, but be strong, I'd be OK with that. Muscle is denser than fat so I'd probably lose a bunch of inches.

I am reading this great site: http://www.stumptuous.com/cms/index.php

There is a Y in the same mall as my work. Maybe I can join the gym there. They have free weights and machines. Apparently having free weights is important, especially for short women like me.

I don't like being weak. I want to be fit. I am thinking of going to the gym 2 times a week. That should give my muscles plenty of time to build.

I don't care if people stare at me lifting weights because I'm a woman. I know I will never get bulky muscles like guys, it just isn't possible for women who train naturally.

I think I should hire a personal trainer temporarily to learn about the machines and exercises.

Deneb I used to lift and did build muscles and was larger yes stronger. But the muscle builds under fat. I recommend lots of reps of light weights. Best for women. Love Phillipa

Didn't your doctor recently tell you to take it easy with exercise? Perhaps you should ask him about it.

It'll be easier to lose fat if I had a lot of muscle. The people who lift weights don't seem fat to me.

I am looking to build muscle.

I'm pretty sure this exercise is OK. Even elderly people can train. They just have to start slow just like all beginners.

Right now I'm doing squats with no weights. I'm pretty weak right now so even doing 5 squats using only my bodyweight are tough.

I'm also doing some sissy pushups. LOL You know, the pushups where your knees touch the ground.

I can't wait to get strong.

A million years ago in my early twenties, fresh out of the Navy's "Submersible Fleet", I entered a new life of College and curiosity... When it sunk in that being over 200 lbs meant I had no future as a track star, I joined a club for body builders as a "wanna-be" and was introduced to power-lifting by a couple of club patrons... I was toooo spindly for the heavyweight class and toooo tall and bulky for the lighter weight classes... I also found that jogging clubs had a class for us over 200 lbs called the "Clydesdales", and thus renewed my interest in distance running... I lifted and jogged, finding a happy medium, which I swear still serves me today, now that I'm fat and old, but in good health by all indicators (other than the bathroom scale)...

That's neat Rod.

I am going to join the YMCA and my goals are to squat my bodyweight and do weighted chin ups. I hope it's possible. LOL

I am just squating with 10 pound weights right now. I'll work myself up. I am getting stronger already. On my first day I couldn't do 5 unweighted squats, I fell down for the last one because I couldn't get up LOL. Now I can do more.

It's great motivation to do heavier weights.
