You don't have to be crazy to work here...

Posted by sowhysosad on May 11, 2009, at 22:52:35

I'm currently in the process of returning to the world of full-time work after a pretty intense six-month depression.

It's a perfect situation for easing myself back in, as it's a small business owned by a friend and I already know many of my co-workers socially. However, I still felt a little nervous about people judging me because I'm pretty open about my depression.

So I was somewhat heartened today to learn that - of a workforce of only about 10 - THREE others are also currently living with mental health issues! One woman is medicated for depression and addiction issues, another has been suffering depression and suicidal thoughts, and a third has OCD!

What are the odds?!

They are all people with unique talents and strengths too, which underlines what I've often thought about people with our afflictions.

Can I come work there? ;-)

Sounds like a good place for you. Let us know how it goes. I'm looking for a nice, low stress job too. Its not easy when jobs are so hard to come by these days. Really just some support and understanding can go a long way in bringing down the stress level though.

I agree with what you said about those of us with mental health issues. I think our obstacles make us have to delve deeper than most, which brings out those unique talents and strengths.

So when is your first day? Or have you already started? Keep us updated, there's a lot of us here who understand what you're going through.

It's a small radio station Phillipa.

Mental illness is fairly common in "creative" types, but one of the afflicted is in sales and the other two are from non-radio backgrounds.

Thanks Chic!

I've already started helping out with getting the place back up and running, but I haven't formally started as such.

It's surprising how many people are suffering with mental health conditions that we're not aware of.

I work in the social work field. In my particular position, I have frequent contact with other social workers but also lawyers, people who work as advocates for children in the courtroom, law enforcement, etc. I was recently in a room with two colleagues, one court advocate and one lawyer, and they began talking about their depression and their hospitalizations for depression in the past. Both of them! I too suffer from depression and have been hospitalized but didnt join in the conversation... but what a surprising moment for me. Both of these colleagues are respected and competent at what they do. Just points out how you never know what goes on with people internally and in their own lives.... (Note that I'm being intentionally vague about their exact positions for reasons of their confidentiality, but you get the idea).

Ya know it makes me think. With all the protected classes of people relating to employment. Just maybe we at PB can start our own corporation. You would have to have a high-level, well documented mental illness to be considered for employment. None of this silly dysthymia would get you in. You would have to fail a mental health test. Let's see, what could we do... I know, what do most of us love to do when we achieve high levels of AD's? EAT! It would be our job! We will review restaurants - all over the world. We will proudly take up 2 seats on our flights. We will have our own TV show. Any suggestions for a name?
Dave
