Private forums not private either

Posted by jane d on October 26, 2010, at 3:22:13

This link is from a recent series in the Wall Street Journal about internet privacy. It describes companies gatherring user information from a member only medical forum. I'm posting it primarily for those former babblers who've said they feel safer at forums like that however I think everyone should read it. It's important to realize that EVERYTHING posted anywhere on the internet is potentially public. That's not necessarily always bad but we should always be weighing the potential risks and benefits.

The rest of the series is interesting too.

.....

I just can't say what I think about this practice without violating civility guidelines.

I love the internet age. I wouldn't go back for anything in the world. But the price we're paying is high.

Thanks for bringing that to our attention.

There are many ways to protect your personal and civil liberties online. In fact, I have spent plenty of time researching the very deep (some say dark) world of people who specialize in leaving as little of a trace of yourself on the internet as possible. You have a right to this.

There are legal tools, many technologically easy to use, but unfortunately not a lot of people know of them, to make yourself as anonymous as possible.

One website that will rip as much information off of you if it can, is facebook. There are easy to use guides and such out there to protect yourself, though. People really, REALLY have to educate themselves, but *they* (corporations/big business/etc) don't want us to be educated. Regardless of all of the so-called 'disclaimers' on websites, you only have to divulge what you want. If you have the proper computer software/technology, this is easily done.

There are some interesting libertarian freedom movements like "Copyleft" out there.
